My wife and I ate here at the recommendation of a train seat mate as well as our waiter at a pub the night before. Both said that this was their favorite restaurant in Cologne for schnitzel. What better recommendation could you ask for than two locals recommending the same restaurant in the span of a couple hours. We, of course, had to go. I am glad we did as this was not on our radar from Yelp or google simply because of the radius search from our hotel. We took a cab from the train station (right near our hotel) to the restaurant and got there about 10 mins before it opened. There was already a line and we got the last outside table. It was about 30 minutes before we got our meal because everyone ordered at once, but the beer was flowing and the weather was perfect so we did not even notice. The schnitzel was hands down the best I have ever had and I was full with a full plate remaining. The portions are huge and that does not take away from the quality. I would recommend this to anyone and just get the original, it is a classic...
Read moreBei Oma Kleinmann’s restaurant is the hidden jewel of Köln! It may not look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you. Not only was the schnitzel amazing, but our server (Gunnar) was absolutely top-notch! We had an incredible time and tipped over 50%, it was that good!!! You can’t go wrong with home cooked meals, generous portions, an endless supply of ice-cold Kölsch and great atmosphere! Of all the places we dined at while in Germany, this was one of the few where staff, more than just Gunnar, actually came to our table to ask how everything was (in Canada we call that a quality check, now sure what it is referred to elsewhere). It was also great to learn about the history of Oma “Paula” Kleinmann which you can see throughout the restaurant. If we’re ever in Köln again, this is one place we’ll certainly re-visit and will whole-heartedly recommend to others as well! Thank you Gunnar and staff for an amazing and memorable experience! Cheers to your continued health and prosperity! Bis wir uns...
Read moreI have had schnitzel all across Germany as it is one of my favourite mainland European dishes; non compare to the schnitzel I had here. The pork was moist, the breadcrumb was perfectly cooked, and the potato salad was delicious. Even the salad they provide beforehand was perfect, with pine nuts providing a fantastic contrast to the sweet salad flavour.
The best addition? The service. A bit of a wait for a table as the locals piled in (usually a good sign for a tourist when the locals like the place), but we were seated as soon as there was space. And then, we were catered for throughout by a fantastic pair of servers (Maureen and Johann) who were attentive and genuinely caring about our experience.
Following the best food I've eaten in a long time, we were given a sample of some schnapps to taste which went down a treat.
Thank you so much for a fantastic introduction to the warm hospitality Cologne has to offer, it has been an...
