Capricorn (i) Aries Brasserie — Restaurant in Cologne

Well I have to say we were slightly underwhelmed. Although they have an impressive track record of mentions in the Michelin guide, our visit was most ordinary.

It might be due to our stopping by on a Monday night in the middle of July, but on slow nights such as these it is more important than ever to take care of your guests. Our hostess, which seemed to be running the restaurant, was very friendly and nice, but also very whimsical and a bit preoccupied with friends and other visitors. We were not in a hurry, but felt like we were not her priority at times.

They were low on wine and the selection and knowledge was sub par. Food prices were a bit high for the main courses, but otherwise quite fair.

The food itself is honest, French- inspired cooking. Plenty of salt, butter and flavour. Very tasty and fulfilling but not so creative. I expected more. Also some other German and middle eastern influences and we quite enjoyed or appetizers of hummus, salami, bread and a nice complimentary veal terrine.

All in all, an enjoyable visit, let down by high expectations, some neglect in service and pricey main dishes. But the food and atmosphere is...

That place has some issues. Service is friendly in general, but somewhat erratic. We waited quite a while for our table but also for the first sip of wine… we had been 15 min. early for our reservation, but waited 30 min. until seated. The whole restaurant is slightly overheated and quite outdated. Tablecloth are outworn and pitted, table and ceiling lamps are full of stains and washed-up. The furniture had better days. The bathrooms need maintenance. Food was hit and miss. Some dishes quite oversalted. Poultry was dry. Fish was good and a point (they got that one right). All the side dishes were nothing to call home about. The sauces for meat and fish were exactly the same, except that one came with tarragon the other with chive. The mashed potatoes actually had a skin… It felt like time-travelling to the 90ies. Wines overpriced, the choices on their list were general wholesale items, so that wasn’t difficult to determine. No idea when or why they earned a Bib Gourmand, guess those people from Michelin should revisit. It definitely wasn’t good value for money, hence...

Der Empfang war sehr nett, der Service jedoch extrem langsam. Wir haben wirklich immer sehr lange darauf gewartet Getränke bestellen zu können und bis diese dann am Tisch ankamen verging auch viel Zeit. Die Speisekarte ist sehr klein, das fanden wir jedoch sehr gut, da das im Normalfall für Qualität spricht. Wir hatten zur Vorspeise den Ziegenkäse mit Salat: Der Ziegenkäse war sehr lecker und die Portion war auch wirklich gut für eine Vorspeise. Der Salat war leider schon etwas matschig, weil er vermutlich länger im Dressing lag. Das mag ich leider überhaupt nicht.

Zum Hauptgang hatten wir Steak, "Pommes" und Salat: Der Salat war leider wieder etwas zu matschig, aber trotzdem schmackhaft. Die Pommes waren selbstgemacht, jedoch eher so, wie wenn man sie daheim selbst macht - nicht wirklich knusprig. Aber sie waren lecker. Das Steak war nicht meins, es war kein Rumpsteak sondern ein Entrecote und das war mir leider zu fettig, hier wäre ein Rumpsteak oder Filet meiner Meinung nach angebrachter, da es eher den Geschmack der Allgemeinheit trifft (vor allem bei einem Preis von 42 €). Die Sauce war lecker.

Zum Dessert gab es eine Crème Brûlée, diese war perfekt!

Am Ende haben wir inkl. Einem Glas Wein und zwei Schorlen 130,00 € bezahlt, das fand ich persönlich etwas hoch, wenn man bedenkt, dass die Portion der Hauptspeise doch ziemlich klein war. Wir geben gerne Geld aus beim Essen gehen (daher haben wir ja auch dieses Lokal ausgesucht), aber es muss dann eben auch passen. Geschmacklich war alles okay bis gut, aber nichts Besonderes.

Der Service müsste wirklich aufmerksamer sein. Der Laden war nicht im Ansatz voll und es waren 3 Servicekräfte vor Ort, trotzdem hat alles wirklich lange gedauert, wir waren fast 2,5 Stunden im Lokal.

Außerdem muss ich gestehen, dass ich es nicht ideal finde, wenn die Servicekräfte in einem Lokal mit Holzboden in Absätzen arbeiten. Es war wirklich laut, da man ständig das Laute Geklacker der Schuhe um sich...
