Used to really love this place and come here for special occasions, as was the case today. Unfortunately this will have been my last visit. I'm not usually one to complain or dramatize but this time it was a disaster. First, I ordered a "Japanese mocktail". Not only did it take forever to arrive and it was missing some of the ingredients depicted on the menu, but much worse the glass was pretty much a not-even-half-full wine glass of orange juice, half of which was ice. It's basically a sip of juice supposed to cost 7,50 EUR. Really a joke. As the waitress had already left before I realized this, I walked up to the bar with the drink and menu in hand and said to the staff that I'm not happy with the drink as the glass on the menu is clearly almost full (as it should be) and mine arrived not even half full. He said it's a different glass shown on the menu and that's how it is. No offer of topping it up, no apologies for such a pathetic rip-off, no asking if I wanted another drink or anything. I told him I didn't want it anymore and walked back to the table. I'm paying over 100 Euros for a dinner for two, but they're too cheap to even make this right. It gets worse - the oil at the base of the grill had not been cleaned and started popping and splashing (probably from food residue of previous guests) before we even started grilling. It got so bad at some point it splashed into my eye and into my wife's face. It was outright dangerous and impossible to enjoy our expensive dinner, instead we were tensed up pressed into a corner as far away from the grill as possible to avoid having our faces burnt. Another staff, only when alerted, came to help and apologized. She said she'll turn down the heat but that clearly would not address the issue and also we only just started grilling. Should I slow-cook my A5 beef?! Only when requested were we moved to another table, and she apologized multiple times for the trouble. Overall, there was very little service, nobody asking whether we wanted anything else to drink unless we flagged them down. The salad had almost no dressing and was dry, when we requested more dressing it took a long time once again. Even when paying the bill there was no interest in finding out whether we had been satisfied today but the staff probably already knew they had done poorly. Lastly, the lack of Japanese people in this otherwise fairly authentic Japanese place (food-wise) is concerning as well and may be another indication that things have changed for...
Read moreA lot of Bling-Bling and less quality
We have been there and ordered the Ah menu for € 38,- € For two persons do not expect to order Ah once and Un once. Its not in their terms and conditions. You either have to order twice Ah or twice Un. At the beginning they tell you that the the pricier Un will be served in a better looking wooden triangle while Ah on a normal dish which is decorated nicely. We started with a Fish-Salad which was tasting good but tatsted like having glutamate inside. After that the double Ah arrived. A poorly looking dish with chicken, duck, Iberico and beef on it. It looked more like having a breakfast dish in the morning with some salami and ham on it. If you don’t order a small cup of rice for which you have to pay shameless €4,50, all the plate will feel like an Amuse bouche, which you’ll get in a real Michelin Star kitchen at the beginning before you order, of course with a different quality.
All the meat was less than 100g for one person. Imagine that. Don’t want to be impolite but Wagyu is oceans away from the beef we get. Chicken and duck have been ok but nothing special for the price. Wines were also not a big deal. The Iberico (pork) was average.
Overall, you don’t pay for a dinner. You’ll pay for a fake meat tasting and the coolness of the owner. The ambiente is ok and this restaurant is more a place for people who want to tell they have been in a special restaurant and payed a lot because they can afford it while not having the knowledge, taste and the eyes to identify and enjoy real quality. This is the first time I am writing a negative review for a restaurant because that’s too far away from fairness. And those who are writing here that good meat would have its price they just enjoyed the sauces on the cheap meat rather...
Read moreThe brand new Ah-Un is a huge upgrade from the past two places that have been here - thank god. Together with the Daidokoro Umaimon there are two great authentic Japanese options available around Seestern.
The restaurant is very cozy, yet serves upscale food. The meat they have on the menu is excellent. Special cuts like beef tongue, special meat like Wagyu beef, French chicken,...
You grill everything at the table. Be aware that there are no sides included in the beef, so order some Edamame and one of their nice salads!
We had the "Ah" moriawase which was about 220-250g assorted meat per person I would guess. This consists of choice cuts of beef, chicken, duck and pork. The meat was simply perfect. The beef was wonderfully marbled and tender, the Ibérico pork shoulder was delectable and the poultry was great as well.
The interior was minimalistic but cosy. We immediately felt transported back to Japan :) The whole experience at the Ah-Un was authentic and we are looking forward to our next visit!
There should be enough parking available in the area with no special restrictions. Use Amboßstraße if you come by car, which has enough spaces available in the evening. Otherwise take the tram to Prinzenallee and walk the...
