Zum Wildschütz — Restaurant in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

We have been coming to Garmisch as part of our Skiing holidays for 40 years. We have always come to the Zum Wildschutz restaurant because the place had a great atmosphere, the food has been so good,

and the menu varied.

Normally the place has always been full and humming so I made a booking to ensure a table but this time, when we arrived, 70% of the tables were devoid of customers - unprecedented for Sunday Lunchtime !

We soon discovered why : in March 2023 the menu is very poor - Bavarian steak was not even on the menu ! Portions were reasonable, but mayonaise in plastic Sachets ? Not what one expects from a good restaurant. I wasn't even offered any or ketchup with my Pork Schnitzel. The male waiter appeared devoid of personality - not his fault, he had clearly received little training in hospitality.

Being so empty, some music might have lightened the atmosphere, and although every shop window in Garmisch was heaving with Easter decorations, there were none in the restaurant.

We suspect there has been a change of management. We can only hope the current operator improves everything,. Otherwise the place will have no future. We will give it one more try on our next visit....

Since 2011, this restaurant has been a must for my family every time we have visited Garmisch. Unfortunately a few days ago we made a reservation at 6pm for my family, we have a toddler and a baby. We were told we would have to share the table and only had till 7:30 to eat, this was not a problem for us. We arrived on time and promptly placed our order. We know we only have a reasonable amount of time to eat since our kids are young. We waited almost 40 minutes to get our salad and soup. We asked if we could get my two year old his fries, the waitress told us she was sorry but had forgotten to place our order, however the entrees would be fast. In the meantime two ladies sat at our table and ordered their food. In the time we waited for our entrees the other two ladies received their food, ate, paid and left. We finally got our food and ate. We normally have dessert but declined this time. Most of the tables around us had received their food and many had not arrived till after us. Called and got a reservation on the same day, upon arrival my wife and I were charmed by how cozy the place is. We had a table on a corner which was perfect for us. The staff greeted and sat us down quickly. The waitress spoke great English and was super helpful, especially since we asked a million questions about the menu.

For the food, my wife ordered the potato soup, which btw it was one of the best potato soup's I have ever had in my life.

For the main course I ordered the pork knuckle and let me tell you, that was the crunchiest pork skin ever and the sauce that they served the pork on is to die for.

My wife ordered the marinated sheep cheese salad and for a person that doesn't eat alot of salad, when I tasted her's...I was blown away. The different layers of flavors within the salad were mind blowing.
