Podium — Restaurant in Gera

Service is excellent.

The food is mediocre - the french fries and potato wedges are not made with fresh potatoes. They are from a frozen bag (in this part of Germany 🇩🇪 cutting fresh potatoes and serving them to customers is yet unheard of).

The seasonal menu is out of season because the asparagus is served in March and early April when they still grow under plastic and taste like water.

The sauces are powders mixed with water (typical German "cuisine") and supermarket type salad " sauces".

Mushroom condiments are made with fresh mushrooms and are hence better than sauces but taste wise they are average.

There is only one dessert which is not bad but it won't blast you out of your chair (it is a pop in the microwave round chocolate cake with runny chocolate inside and a ball of "vanilla" ice cream).

The venue is clean and pleasant but there is no music so you basically listen to other diners who are drunk or about to get drunk or (more often than not) are pretending to be drunk.

The local beer is average (not remotely as good as craft beers sold in Czechia 🇨🇿 and Poland 🇵🇱).

And yes, have cash at hand unless you are one of the lucky few that still carries an EC karte.

Anyway Gera is a mid sized town in the former East Germany so adjust your expectations...

Good food, large portions, resonable prices, nice service (except for one, more on that later). Overall, I would be very happy with my colleagues if there was no payment incident. It turned out that they have an antique terminal that does not accept VISA cards, and we only had VISA cards. When finding a solution, the oldest service lady said offensively that we should pay with a German card because we are in Germany and it's a German restaurant. Apart from her obvious stupidity, it was quite OK, the younger and nicer service ladies found a way by asking for a terminal from the restaurant next door. But if you don't have a "German card" - avoid...

Ich bin Podium Stammkunde, im Podium bekommt man immer leckeres Essen zu guten Preisen! Heute muss ich aber eine negative Bewertung abgeben. Wir hatten langfristig für Samstag einen Tisch im Podium bestellt und man wusste da bereits, dass eine Veranstaltung im KUK ist,denn die Kellnerin am Telefon sagte es. Auch wir wollten dort hin, den Tisch hatten wir für 17:15 Uhr bestellt, gegen 17:30 Uhr kam die Kellnerin und hat die Getränke-und Essenbestellung aufgenommen. Die Kellnerin war zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon angespannt und überfordert. Es kam von ihrer Seite auch kein Hinweis, auf höhere Wartezeiten und so warteten wir geduldig.Gegen 18:30 Uhr wurden wir dann doch unruhig, auf Nachfrage, meinte die Kellnerin, wir wären der nächste Tisch, der das Essen bekommt. Gegen 18:40 Uhr war es dann endlich soweit. Wir hatten also 10 Minuten,um das Essen reinzuschlingen. Das Essen war so heiß, dass ich mir Zunge und Gaumen verbrannt habe, also es war alles Andere,als ein Genuss. Das Personal wirkte über den ganzen Abend hilflos überfordert, es war anscheinend keiner da, der Gläser spülen konnte, man bekam sein benutztes Glas wieder neu aufgefüllt zurück, es hieß, wir haben keine Gläser. Ein kleiner Hinweis, am Wochenende ist wieder eine Veranstaltung im KUK, einfach etwas mehr Personal, sowohl in der Küche, als auch beim Service einplanen oder den Gästen die Wahrheit gleich am Anfang sagen und eine Entschuldigung wäre auch angebracht gewesen. Schade, ansonsten eine gute Gaststätte, aber an diesem Abend sind einige Gäste unzufrieden rausgegangen und die Freude, auf den schönen Abend und die Veranstaltung...
