Tiergartenschänke Hannover — Restaurant in Hanover

Great local spot! Visited last night, there were men in the corner playing cards, a couple with a dog enjoying a glass of wine and lots of local people enjoying the evening. The place is small and cozy with low ceilings and lots of paneling and wood (sort of reminds me of my in-laws basement in the late 70's). They have an extensive menu, mostly of home cooked style items with lots of vegetarian items. I had a side salad (very fresh) with a cup of Hungarian goulash (excellent) and some pork medallions on toast with mushrooms and emmenthal cheese (wow, really good) and a couple pints of the local brew. Everything was very tasty and very reasonably priced. no problem with English either. This was the most enjoyable meal by far during my 10 days in Hannover. The restaurant is right at the team stop. It is only about 15 minutes on the tram from downtown (kropke or aegidientorplatz); just take the #5 to Anderton. Next time I am in town, I will definitely...

2nd Visit and Just as Great! This is my favourite spot in Hannover and my 2nd visit in 2 years. The food is excellent, the beer is refreshing and the staff is friendly. Despite my being an obvious 'non-local' (I can't speak German) at a clearly 'local' establishment, I felt very comfortable here. The food is a refreshing change from most humdrum restaurant meals. It seems 'home cooked'. I had the goulash (fabulous) and a pork/mushroom/ementhal cheese dish (also wonderful). This place is really easy to get to, just take the 5 tram towards Anderton from the city centre and get off at Tiergarten. The front door is right across the street from the tram stop. Note I mistakenly took the 5 tram in the opposite direction and got about 20 stops away before realizing my mistake. The meal was still worth the extra...
