Nice chill atmosphere. Smoking is allowed inside. Fantastic home cooked food and friendly staff.
The name of the bar “Zur Pleißenburg” means To the Pleissenburg in English. The Pleissenburg (German: Pleißenburg) was a historical building in the city of Leipzig.
There’s a little bar that flight crews frequent in Narita called the Jet Lag bar (which is fantastic and I highly recommend you visit when you’re there). Sadly the Jet Lag is closed late at night and early morning contrary to it’s name that suggests it might be a nice spot for those suffering jet lag at 4 am. I do wish the JetLag was open 24/7 but I understand it it impossible with the economy and staffing such as it is.
But I digress….!
Zur Pleißenburg is open all night in the true JetLag spirit. If you find yourself wandering the streets of Leipzig at 4am, go the Zur Pleißenburg and have a Schwartzbier (dark beer). Have a look at the menu. Each item on the menu is described in English. Everything on the menu is outstanding authentic home cooking. Really, it’s cooked in the chefs home kitchen upstairs and they send it down in the dumb-waiter. It doesn’t get more “home cookin” than that.
The Schnitzels are the best. If there are specials, order one of those. They are based on locally grown seasonal produce and you will not be disappointed.
Zur Pleißenburg continues to be my favorite spot in Leipzig 12 years after my first visit. I hope you like it as...

A short 4 minute stroll from the crowds of the town centre has you here. My wife had the beef Goulash and it was out of this world. I had the Bratwurst, Sauerkraut and gravy and it was almost as good. I don't get the reviews about the waitress, she served us and was perfectly nice. We don't speak German but tried to pronounce the dishes in German and she was very receptive. Personally it annoys me when English speaking tourists visit a country and couldn't be bothered even trying to speak the language. English is our native tongue by the way, but...
Read moreFood was ok, service was absolutely appalling. The server made us feel unwanted the entire time. First said we could only see on a pub bench, while other, smaller tables were available. (Would then happily serve others who would take the free tables) Then would take forever to give us menus or take our order while ignoring any of our attempts to speak to her.
When I asked the server if the food contained lactose she answered that the kitchen has better things to do than answering my questions.
Food was passable at best, schnitzel was dry and chewy. Definitely wouldn’t return...
