If you're looking for a hotel to stay in for a concert at Lorely Freilichtbuhne or just fancy a relaxing break along the beautiful Rhine river....then look no further. This is the perfect place to be. We stayed here from 16th to 19th June 2016. A long weekend away so we could attend a concert at Lorely Freilichtbuhne on the 17th...and this hotel is on the 'right' side of the river so no need to get a boat across with hundreds of others before you can make your way to a concert.||||I really can't say enough good things about Hotel Colonius. A charming, family run, hotel. The owners are so friendly and can't do enough to help you. They're doing everything from the checking in and out of the guests, the cooking and serving of food and drinks, to providing information to the guests about anything you ask. It's really got the personal touch.||||The room was more than adequate. Very comfy bed, we slept very well. Our room had a beautiful view, looking out on to the Rhine river and the beautiful scenery on the other side. Buses to take you to the concert are literally on the doorstep of the hotel. If you sit in the restaurant you can see the buses and decide when is a good time to leave....very handy as it was raining very hard that day!||||Breakfast in the morning is so personal, I really loved this. On your table is a basket of fresh bread, rolls and crackers and a (large) portion of lovely jam waiting for you. The owner greets you, asks if you slept well, and would you like tea or coffee. We're coffee drinkers so you get a pot of coffee bought to your table and the first cup poured for you. Then there's a very good selection of breakfast choices as buffet. Cereals, meats and cheeses, yoghurts, fruit, scrambled egg and bacon, boiled egg! More than enough choice for anyone.||||The restaurant in the hotel is very popular in the area....and I can see why! Wow, we ate so well there. Huge portions. Delicious schnitzels! The owners let us watch how to prepare the perfect schnitzel on the last evening.||||Price/Quality balance here is excellent. Highly recommend Hotel Colonius....you should...
Read moreI have stayed at the Hotel Colonius, a traditional Rhineland hotel, many times over the last 40 years and I have never been disappointed. It is just about unique among hotels in the Rhine Gorge in that it doesn’t have the main road or the railway line, or even both, running between it and the river so you get a wonderful uninterrupted and peaceful view out over the river from the dining room. It has been in the hands of the Colonius family for several generations and they provide genuine Rhineland hospitality with a very warm welcome. They are a superb source of information on places to go, things to see, events coming up. |The hotel is a relatively old building - or rather several buildings linked together - with some lovely creaky wooden floorboards. But the bedrooms have all been modernised with en-suite facilities, TV etc. Ask for a room on the river side of the building a few of which have small balconies. (The ones on the other side do overlook the road and the railway.). As well as the restaurant with the fantastic view over the river, there is a breakfast room, also on the river side, and a lounge bar area on the other side. If you are the sort of person who wants large open plan lounges, spa treatments, swimming pool, games room etc. in your hotel then the Colonius is probably not for you. But if you want a simple clean comfortable place to stay with the unique location the Colonius enjoys then you will not be...
Read moreHotel Colonius is right on the river front and that's its one good feature. The view to the Rhine and the castle on the other side is great. Seen from the street it looks quite small but from the river (the back of the hotel) it's obvious that it is very big. It looks like something from one of the Eastern Bloc countries from years ago – large and eerie … We had room no 9 – the view was great and there was actually a small balcony. But the room was a bit worn, the shower worked only so-so, and there was an unpleasant smell in the bathroom. The WiFi didn't work – there was a Vodafone hotspot service but it didn't seem to work. Breakfast was adequate but nothing special; the breakfast room somewhat bare. We stayed just one night during our week-long hike along the Rhine and this was the least good of the places we stayed...
