Cafe Voila — Restaurant in Munich

I know café Voilà from many former visits. My previous experiences have been all positive. Not this time. What I describe in the lines below never happened to me before either here or in any place in Munich, but it might be the new sign of times.

Apparently in Voilà there is an implicit time limit about how long you can stay in their café. Even if the café was almost empty on a dull Saturday morning, I was requested to order more or if not... invited to go (!!). This happened to me even when I have had to wait 15 minutes for my coffee because... the waitress had forgotten my order. And this again, on a quiet Saturday, without much going on in the place.

The owners of the place don't seem to understand something obvious: the very same customer that sometimes doesn't rush, doesn't order much and seems to be (at the eyes of the owner/staff) making use of their space... that same customer may bring at other times a group of ten for dinner with him/her. This is exactly my case. However, the owner seems to be thinking here very very short-term.

Good, from now on café Voilà has lost me as a customer and my other friends that happily came from here for dinner or a coffee and cake. We'll go to a more welcoming place.

Don't get this message wrong. The place is very nice, there is plenty of room and the service is usually very kind. It is only that you should keep to the owner's revenue expectations as a...

Das Voila und ich haben sich ein wenig auseinandergelebt. Früher bin ich mit Inventarnummer versehen worden. Heute ist die Belegschaft im Schnitt nur noch halb so alt wie ich.

Man ist seinem Konzept und der Zielgruppe treu geblieben. Was Licht und Schatten gleichermaßen mit sich bringt.

Der Service hat sich nach einigen Tiefen berappelt und stellt wieder fähige und freundliche Leute. Ich weiß, dass ist eine schwierige Angelegenheit. Trotzdem ist es schön wenn man beim Kopfrechnen keine Zahnräder mehr klicken hört und einfache Wünsche nicht mehr auf verwunderte, unverständige Blicke treffen. Freundliches, professionelles Personal wertet einen Laden einfach deutlich auf.

Essen kann man hier immer noch sehr gut. Bunt gemischte internationale Küche mit ein paar klassischen Highlights wie dem riesigen Kalbsschnitzel. Die Tageskarte hat den Namen verdient und bietet spannende Alternativen zur normalen Karten. Sehr zu empfehlen ist nach wie vor das Frühstück. Wer also ohne großen Vorlauf einen Happen essen will, findet hier meist problemlos ein nettes Plätzchen. Die Preise sind durchweg angemessen, nur der Grillteller sticht unangenehm teuer hervor.

Auch das Ladenkonzept hat sich bewährt. Die bei schönem Wetter heiß begehrten Außenplätze bieten einen wunderbaren Ausblick auf die quirlige Wörthstraße. Hier ist einfach immer was los. Kommt man durch den opulenten Windfang in den Laden fallen zuerst die hohen Decken und Kronleuchter auf. Hier haben eindeutig klassische Kaffeehäuser Pate gestanden. Die zentrale Bar wird von einem geräumigen l-förmigen Gastraum umschlossen der im hinteren Teil von einer Glaskuppel gekrönt wird. Obwohl das Voila immer gut besucht ist findet sich bis auf die Wochenend-Abende eigentlich immer ein Plätzchen. Da ist es mir dann aber sowieso zu laut. Passt schon. Die Toiletten wurden gründlich saniert. Jetzt strahlt alles in neuem Glanz und das kleine gruseln beim betreten des stillen Örtchens fällt weg.

Die Cocktails zur Happy Hour sind nur noch eine Karikatur alkoholischer Mixgetränke. Dem feierwilligem Abendpublikum geschuldet ist leider mittlerweile irgendwie immer Happy Hour. Glücklicherweise ist die Auswahl an Alternativen groß und beinhaltet auch Augustiner.

Für mich nur noch der kulinarische Start in einen schönen Tag, ist das Voila immer noch ein guter Laden mit wunderbar...

We went there last evening for dinner and we were in a large group of about 25 people. The place was crowded due to the match Germany-Spain, but the atmosphere was electric and exciting, and the kindness of the people present and their enthusiasm made the dinner livelier. Having said this, the waitress that attended to us was impressive: she was very cordial and professional, and knew Italian, which made ordination more convenient for us.
