Restaurant Altes Sägewerk — Restaurant in Oberammergau

Finding out that Monika started this restaurant, together with family, made that I needed to go there. Monika for me is the kindest, warmest and caring person I know in Oberammergau, I know her as an excellent host when she's renting her apartments. But, it's about the restaurant! Well, obviously not disappointed. We started with a nice bubble as a welcome, including some bread with great stuff. I won't spoil it all, since the staff very kindly explains you what you will get. They do it better than I do. One of the dishes of the week was the asparagus with veal schnitzel. Well, that dish was simply excellent. And again the same happened with the fresh dessert with rhubarb ice. So, this is not your average place. Everything is served with attention for the food and guests, the staff makes you feel very welcome and provide good advice. Take your time when coming here, and I say that because you want to spend time here, not because service is slow. Relax, enjoy great quality food and wine and I hope you brought some good company. And if Monika is working when you visit, please...

Second Update...(Now 5 stars)

I went here tonight with a large group, and I have to say, the staff was very accommodating, the food was terrific, and the whole experience was wonderful. I can easily recommend Altes Sägewerk to anyone visiting the area.

Update... (Changed from 3 to 4-stars).

After a few more trips, I think Altea Sägewerk has settled into a model that provides a reliable quality meal, with great service, at a decent price. I really like what they have done, and will happily return for special occasions.

Nice restaurant, 2/3 times have been amazing and 1/3 was so-so.

I just realized that it was Vatertag tonight, and despite their Instagram advertisement that every Papa gets a free Schnapps, I did not, in fact, receive a free Schnapps. Minus one star...

The food was outstanding. I had the consumme and the mac & cheese. May have been some of the best mac & cheese of my life. Our waiter was friendly, and polite.

The woman who greeted us at the door was an absolute horror. She refused to make eye contact with any of us, made it very clear that she didn’t want us there, and made us feel totally uncomfortable. Why would you hire someone whose job it is to welcome people, who in turn, makes them feel unwelcome?

Furthermore, we wanted to take home leftovers and she came over with some sheets of tin foil. Bizarre… and of course, refused to speak to any of us or acknowledge our presence.
