First off, for those who don't speak German, "Hendl House" literally means "chicken house." The name derives from the restaurant on the ground floor that serves a variety of chicken dishes (very good ones, in fact). While it's a little weird to stay in a chicken house, our one-night stay was perfectly agreeable. Really, this is more of a pension or gasthaus sort of deal than a hotel. That's not a bad thing, just don't expect any sort of hotel amenities or services.||||The hotel is located on the floors above the restaurant and is of good quality. We booked a three-bed room at the beginning of our bike tour along the Danube River from Passau to Vienna. Most of the other hotels were booked or terribly expensive, so we took a chance on the Hendl House. The location is good, in the pedestrian area right near the Altstadt and a block or two from the river. It's about a 5-10 minute, easy walk from the main train station, too. There is no parking at the hotel, but a big lot is a block away by the riverfront. You can pull your car up to temporarily unload in front of the hotel, but finding your way through the warren of streets is a challenge unless you have a GPS/navi.||||Check in is via a small door to the left of the restaurant door. When we arrived it was locked and we accessed it through the restaurant. The reception desk is on the ground floor, and all rooms are up at least one flight of steps (no elevator). The room itself was quite roomy and nicely appointed, and appeared to have been updated recently. Big windows opened to the adjacent street, which had a bit of noise in the night, but not too bad (it's a pedestrian area off the main pedestrian strip). There is no AC in the hotel as far as I know.||||Breakfast was a standard, and good, buffet in the restaurant dining room.||||If you are bike touring and staying there, be aware that their bike storage area, such as it is, is basically a very small open area in the back of the restaurant. It's safe as it is enclosed on four sides, but isn't fully roofed. If more than just a couple of bikes were there it would be hard to fit them all in, I think.||||Staff was pleasant, but harried as they also worked in the restaurant. We ended up eating dinner there the night we stayed, and it was (surprisingly) one of the best meals...
Read moreI was travelling with my wife and friends from Budapest to Great Britain and we were intending to spent the night in this location. After we booked the room we received an email from the hotel administriation to tells us that actually they don't have parking places - though on the website says they do have. They said that there is parking places near by the hotel about 600 meters. As a result of this we asked booking.com to waive the cancelation fee - obviously they did not agree with that, on top of that they said that we need to get at the hotel no later then 22:30 because the reception will be closed - we mentioned to them that the traffiv is jamed and will imposible to get to the hotel in time - no answer after that. I would not recomend this hotel not...
