A must-see when in Passau!

The museum-castle complex includes several museums, restaurant and watchtower with a panoramic viewpoint of the town and the three Rivers Confluence. The main building features diverse exhibits from the history of the castle, architecture comparisons, medieval battles, and a traveling exhibit from Japan on paper making. There were side museums on forestry, apothecary, etc.

Tickets are only 5 Euros, which is a steal for this great attraction, and covered access to the entire compound. There is a small shuttle between the castle drawbridge and the Passau town square for only 1.6 Euros each way - great as the castle sits atop a steep hill.

Note: The bus shuttle didn’t show up on one of the designated pickup times so we opted to walk...

We thought that we would visit the museum and then sightsee in the castle but unfortunately this is not the case - the only things to see inside are what is in the museum. There are armaments, church and liturgical items, portraits, a very few trunks and small furniture items, a few books... There is some information in English though most is in German. The view from the castle is unbeatable. A shuttle bus leaves several times an hour to and from Römerplatz. I believe the fare is €5 each way. I would not advise walking up to the castle. In addition to being an incredible grade, my understanding is the path is not as robust for walking as...

the museum is a combination of myths, history, life in the middle ages spiritually and earthly, porcelain collection, historical pharmacy, bohemian forest culture and the mystery of Brotherhood and a collection of sculptures. All are part of Passau history and it will take at least 2-3 hrs to see and read everything. the Chapel, the high tower visit and the observation deck are also part of the museum.
