Augustiner Potsdam — Restaurant in Potsdam

Not recommended. Customer service is non-existent in this place. Unfriendly to non-smokers. We went to this restaurant with high expectations, but it turned out to be a terrible experience. We waited by the door to ask someone for a table; waitresses walked by and ignored us so we walked up to a waitress at the bar and asked her for a table. She showed us the patio in the back of the restaurant, which is a nice area but the guests were smoking while eating (which for non-smokers is disgusting). We explained to the waitress that we preferred to sit inside because of the smokers, and also because all the tables were empty, she replied that there were only 3 waitresses working and they don’t serve inside. As we asked again if we could sit inside, she then in an annoyed tone told us: “okay, sit inside”. She came to get our orders with a rude, unfriendly and arrogant semblance. Every time we said “vielen Dank”, she didn’t answer anything. We had the feeling that she was doing us a huge favour. The food itself was good but it’s not worth if you have to be treated UNWELCOME. It’s important to say that we spoke German to her and all the staff. Even though we sat inside, all the windows were wide open, therefore, the smoke from the guests that were sitting outside, by the windows, were brought in with the wind. We didn’t dare to ask them to close the windows as it was 35 degrees Celsius inside. Finally, when the bill came, we were uncertain about the price for a drink. We politely asked the waitress to check (was a different waitress, not the same). She also made an annoyed face and full of attitude she went to the bar, picked up the menu, showed the price at the menu (without saying a thing), then she closed the menu abruptly and walked away without answer anything after we say Dankeschön. I've visited Augustiner Restaurant three times over the past few months, and while the food consistently delivers on quality, the service experience has been disappointing each visit.The cuisine itself is well-prepared and enjoyable, though it does come at a premium price point. However, the service issues significantly derail from the overall dining experience. During my visits, including today (July 21st, 2035), I've encountered several concerning patterns: (1) Extremely long wait times for both ordering and receiving bills. We went to Potsdam for an afternoon change of scenery, and since we were hungry we started looking for a place for a decent lunch. After checking out a few restaurants, all were rather disappointing (weird smells, no tables or only outside in the cold or just not open) we came upon Augustiner Potsdam. Service was quick, efficient and friendly. I had the Haxen burger (chopped Schweinshaxe with caramelized onions on a nice bun, with fries and sauerkraut) while my wife had a potato chowder and after a yummy dessert. For the burger it is not a used your hands sort, you must use the provided knife and forks. The food was excellent, and well worth it. Unfortunately the table near us had a rather loud patron and thus the 4 stars for atmosphere. Will def go back when my dad visits us and we make it a day on the other side of Berlin.
