Terrible service and soso food - what happened, it used to be so good?

Took my mother there Monday for a 90th birthday lunch with one other person, and when we got there there was only 1 other couple in the restaurant. My mother wanted a view of the garden and there was a perfect table, I explained this, but the waitress whose English was about grade 2 IELTS wouldn't let us sit there telling us the table was prepared for afternoon tea. The only difference between this table and the one she insisted we sit at was that it had tea cups on it and the napkins were folded a different shape. A half decent staff member would simply have moved the tea cups and everyone would have been happy.

Meanwhile, 3 other customers had come in, a couple and a single, and the waitress ignored us completely serving everyone else first. Everyone had their drinks and one even had their starter before she came to take our order 15 minutes later.

The starters from the £9:95 for 2 courses menu were okay, but the mains terrible. I ordered the chicken with sweet potato and spinach. The small cubes of sweet potato were burned on the outside and almost raw in the centre (photo 1) - I didn't know that was possible, the chicken a tiny 4 slices - about a third of a breast, and the sauce was watery (photo 2) and not hot. My Mother ordered the vegan option, we all tried it, and it was fairly unpalatable. The tomato sauce looked strait out of a tin (photo 3).

Anyway, we spent about an hour after lunch in the lovely gardens, and before we left I looked through the window of the restaurant, and the table that we has wanted and asked for was still unused and empty. That was really annoying. All in all, a waste of £30. Next time we will come and enjoy the gardens with a cup of tea and cake from the bar which is SUPER FRIENDLY and avoid...
