If you’re visiting the beautiful island of Kefalonia you can’t miss this truly hidden gem! Me and my girlfriend Amanda are two real foodies always in search of the real taste and culinary experience. We love to travel and treat ourselves with the local tastes and the best cuisines of the world and this late summer while visiting Kefalonia we were a little struggling to find something that really hit our tastebuds. The island has a lot of very advertised restaurants with local cuisine literally anywhere but nothing really impressed us until we tumbled in Stephen’s Hidden Garden. What to say, if you love a well done barbecue (as we Londoners do😂) you can’t miss it at any cost! The restaurant it’s out of the way of the main harbour’s stroll of Argostoli and it offers an intimate and cozy vibe. It doesn’t take bookings so you better get there not too late as the kitchen has limited servings for the day and you surely want to be one of those earning a sit and get to taste their delicacies. We have been lucky to get there twice before they closed for the season. The first time we tried the lamb chops, best ever had in years competing with those of starred restaurants that we had dined in, and the pork mix equally delicious but the real award it goes to the best Greek salad we had in the whole island. The use of local products and their simplicity really made the difference. We had everything accompanied with some lovely Robola wine and we couldn’t believe at the end of the dinner that we only spent around 50€. The portions were huge value for money and the team caring and attentive at every need and so we decided to come again two days after for their closing day. We were a little late and so we had quickly served some mixed pork and chicken giros accompanied with the must have Greek salad, some pitta bread and wine. Unbeatable again. This time for as little as 30€. What else to say,...
Read moreFirst time visiting the Hidden Garden in Argostoli after seeing lots of great reviews. We found it very easy to find, at the side of the fish and chip shop in the area of the I Love Argostoli sign, and down a short alleyway. The food smells amazing as you approach. It was their last night of the 2024 season when we were there. We both went for Gyros plate, my wife without pitta. When it arrived, we could tell the high quality of the chicken and the skilful way it was cooked from the first bite. My wife's plate was a huge pile of meat, with the accompaniments such as tzatsiki and onion. To get a bit of variation, we asked for the fries (we initially thought the gyros plate would come with a small amount of fries, as is normally the case, so we were a bit surprised when the plates appeared and didn't have any). The kind waiter had said we could ask for anything else at any time, which is a nice touch. Really delicious fries, very good. Our main memories are the quality of the food, which is very high, but on a slightly negative side was the sheer amount of food (which can also be a massive positive depending on your point of view). We were both utterly stuffed and had to leave a bit of Gyros and about a third of the large 2-person portion of fries. I have to say the pitta was also great quality and extremely tasty. Also, the meal was on the pricey side, but this reflects the quality of the food. There is a similar establishment close by in Argostoli which is more authentically Greek rather than being aimed at tourists, it is full of locals as well as the odd tourist group. This place has slightly lesser quality food but still very tasty (and you get a reasonable portion of fries included), and it has better toilet facilities and less flies (both of which were not great at the Hidden Garden). Our choice in the future would be the other establishment, but we are glad we tried the...
Read moreI stumbled upon a hidden gem, a restaurant that felt like it was plucked from a serene, winding alley in Greek. It's nestled in a beautiful, stone-paved courtyard, where few trees and create a peaceful and intimate atmosphere. The simple tables and comfortable chairs perfectly complement the rustic setting. The entire vibe is relaxed and welcoming, and the rich aromas of authentic Greek cooking hang in the air. We arrived as the sun was beginning its slow descent, casting a warm, golden glow over the whole space. The place was bustling with locals and visitors, which only added to the lively and joyous feel. Our waiter approached with a genuine smile and immediately recommended the grilled pork gyros on a skewer, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. The skewer was packed with juicy, tender chunks of pork gyros, grilled to perfection, and served alongside roasted tomatoes, red onion, and fresh pita bread. Every single bite was a celebration of flavor. It was a simple dish, but executed with a mastery that proved there's nothing better than fresh, honest food. If you're looking for a tranquil and charming spot with authentic Greek food made with love, this is the place to be. Highly...
