About a 15 minute walk from the main town, you will find a totally quiet beach with sun all afternoon. The beach is called Ormos Beach. Clean water and lots of fish activity in the sea. Great place for all the family here.
Just a two minute walk from that beach along the road you will find Stavros Taverna. This is a traditional Greek family run business which has been operating for 45 years! Great outside seating with sun all day long until about 5.30 PM (October). Also a lovely indoor seating area traditionally Greek style.
The food and drinks are the cheapest I have seen. I’ve added photos of the menu. Prices here are considerably cheaper than the town down the road.
I had sea bream which was freshly caught. Beers and wine are excellent.
What is good about this place is you can feel the real Greece here. Extremely relaxing and a total contrast to the hustle and bustle of Agios Nikolaos. Well worth the visit! Great food, great prices and excellent hospitality. Highly...
Read moreWe loved Taverna Stavros, went twice in a week. It’s nothing at all fancy - simple local taverna. (We scored 4 not 5 on food to reflect this, but the food was excellent.) And we went in June when the whole area was emptier - hence 4 not 5 on atmosphere but it’s still fun, friendly, welcoming and I’m sure will be lively at the height of the season. The proprietress is lovely - an elderly lady who’s been running the place for a long time, ably assisted now by her fireman son-in-law - and knows just enough English to make you welcome. When not needed at tables the family sit in the corner with friends and watch TV. The food is classic Cretan - nice moussaka, grilled prawns, chicken kebabs. Moist baklava. Beware the (free) raki at the end of the meal - Cretan not Turkish so no aniseed. Well...
Read moreThis is one of the closest Tavernas to our hotel, we have eaten here twice and are planning to eat here again (likely for an early dinner before departure). The food has been very tasty, and very reasonably priced too (including the local wine also!).
Do not be put off by the slightly dated setting, this is an informal place that feels in some ways like visiting your grandmother's house (meant in the best way). The family are wonderfully warm and friendly, you know you will be taken care of here.
Our first night in Crete we ate here, sharing a starter and each having a main and dessert. Three 500ml bottles of Mythos, and about five glasses of local white wine, and the bill was just under €50 in May 2022, and the food was lovely.
I highly recommend you give Taverna...
