Avra — Restaurant in Municipality of Agios Nikolaos

This was our first of many meals out in Agios Nikolaos and I'll be surprised if it'll be beaten. The only downside, and I'm being VERY picky here because the competition is so strong, is that there are barriers across the (pretty quiet) 'main' road that partially obstruct the sea view (I'd give it a 4.8 for atmosphere if I could). That's it. The food is amazing. I had easily the best dorado I've ever had, and possibly the best grilled fish dish I've ever had - the lime sauce is to die for and the best version I've had on the island (again, we are talking very close calls but I'm calling it). Similarly, the dolmades (of which I've had many), just edge it to the front of a very competitive race. The house white wine and (free) entrees and baklava are also excellent. This is simple, classic, Cretan food done to the highest standards. Needless to say, the staff are lovely. The only 'problem' with Agios Nikolaos is that there are so many great restaurants to choose from that we're struggling to find a reason to go back to one, but if I had to pick one...

This is a delightful traditional Greek restaurant. The owners / staff were so attentive and experienced making sure that all tables were served with their meals and drinks. The food was delicious. We were served with complimentary bread and dips to tide us over before our starters of sardines and calamari, which were delicious. The sea bass was cooked perfectly and my husband had the fried cod which was also delicious. After asking for the bill we were given a lemon raki and ice cream. Beautiful food, excellent staff. The staff were so helpful, they rearranged tables to ensure we had the best possible views without us asking, and plugged in extra fans due to the heat wave. The food was 1st class, we travelled with a celiac, and they catered for his needs without hesitation. For 4 adults, 3 courses and drinks, the bill was a little over 80€.
