I've been going to this beach for 40 years. Its changed quite bit (for the better!).
It's been updated with comfortable sunbeds, improved toilets and the restaurants are much much better.
It's very busy during peak periods although if you get there before 11am you should be able to get a sunbed.
The beach itself is sandy (one of only a few in the agios nikolaos area).
Beach service is ok. Not the fastest. But it's better than no service.
There are two restaurants either side. Both provide excellent food. If you're facing the sea, the one on the right do super cheap wine carafes. These are excellent value (I think about 5 euros) and the wine is actually quite drinkable. Cheaper than buying by the glass.
The sea is gorgeous. Go a bit further out and it's like the Caribbean. It's obviously busy in the shallow areas.
We go to Crete every couple of years and we always have a few days on this beach. I have a lot of fond memories and always look forward to...
Read moreTo be honest, I don't understand how this beach has so many positive reviews, because, apart from the fact that it is located right on the edge of the city, it really has no other merit.
The beach itself is very small and crowded. Unless you arrive very early, it’s nearly impossible to find a sunbed to rent—despite the prices being quite high, comparable to those at the famous Voulisma Beach.
In addition to the fact that you can't find sunbeds, the remaining strip of sand is very narrow so, as you can see in the attached picture, many tourists end up laying their beach towels on the nearby asphalt platform, which seems rather uncomfortable to me.
The right side (standing with your back to the sea) is occupied by a private beach, reserved for hotel guests. On the left side, there isn’t really a beach at all, but just a wall from which you can descend into the water (be careful, because the water is deep here, so if you can't swim, don't...
Read moreA great little beach with umbrellas and very comfortable sunbeds at 10 euros per day. It's more like a club on the sea: they play lounge music all day (a pretty good selection and the right volume, congratulations to whoever chooses the playlists) and the beach has a bar, good showers and toilets too. I haven't tried the food, but I saw some people eating good dishes. The sea is very calm here, even in windy days, and the sandy beach makes entering the water a pleasant experience (no shoes needed). The only, minor downside is that the water is closer than in other Cretan beaches, but it's ok all in all. It's possible to reserve in advance, making this an ideal option for weekend days, when finding an umbrella on the spot might be hard in...
