New Mill Tavern — Restaurant in Municipality of Aktio and Vonitsa

We Were Completely Surprised - ALL of the 5 Star Reviews Are Correct!

Although we have had our summer home in the nearby village of Vonitsa for many decades, we were totally unaware of the existence of “The New Mill Tavern” until yesterday, but as they say, “there is no time like the present”. Having read many of the then 373 incredible reviews of the restaurant, nearly all of which were 5 stars, I have to say that I was a little bit skeptical since little in this world can be constantly perfect, but “The New Mill Tavern” proved that at least some things can be.

Using “Waze”, we found the restaurant easily and upon arrival at the beautiful open patio setting, we were warmly welcomed and seated by Mahi, the owner. The choices were presented to us and immediately followed by pitchers of their delicious homemade wine and homemade Tsipouro (the Greek version of Raki). The menu is simple, which I actually like since large menus offering too many choices can be confusing and to me at least, annoying. Although we are open to any dishes, we were a little concerned that our two young children would be difficult to satisfy, but once again, we were completely surprised when we saw them finish everything on their plates leaving no evidence of the delicious dishes that were brought to our table.

Rather than listing the specific dishes, let me just say that EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT and I do mean EVERYTHING!! Each dish had its own wonderful and unique flavors and like our children, we also finished each plate as if we had been starving ourselves for weeks. I am fortunately, very well-traveled and I can confidently and honestly say that our dinner last night was one of the very best experiences I have ever had anywhere and there is no doubt that we have found our new spot in Western Greece. The only regret we have is that it is time to go back to America and we will have to wait until next summer to visit this spectacular restaurant again. When we do though, we are going to take Mahi’s advice to call ahead a day in advance with some off the menu suggestions, but mostly, that we want to be surprised.

For those that may read this review though, if you are anywhere even remotely close to Palairos, you absolutely must visit “The New Mill Tavern” and if you are trusting and adventurous, have her surprise you. This place is amazing. Im so so gutted i only found it on my last night. Let me first start off with the service was absolutely amazing. The owner was so friendly and so welcoming. She really made us feel at home. Secondly the wine. OMG a 5l bottle of Rose was just great. We were disappointed in our own performance as we wanted to finish it but unfortunately between 4 people it was a very hard task. Next the food. WOW. The starts were just fantastic, the garlic and potato puree thing was just out of this world and ive not tasted hummus that good anywhere else. The food then just got better and better as we went on finishing with some homemade baklava. I came away feeling so good with drinking the lovely wine and tasting the amazing food. Lovely atmosphere, great service and food!

The host was super friendly, greeted and guided us to our table, explained us the menu and was not shy on sugestions on what to order or how to combine the dishes. During the evening she check-up on us several times to make sure everything was ok. We had cheese pie and spinach pie as starters, a nicely grilled Dorad fish, fresh from the ocean and they were so nice to fillet the fish in front of us, then some shrimps and Beef Stifado and a nice dessert at the end, all accompanied by a 5l rose house wine bottle at our disposal.
