I'd spotted this place on Google Maps, and it had subsequently been reccomended to me by some local bar owners, so I was keen to try it out. It was 6.39 and still fairly early for dinner so I was the first to arrive. The decor is a mix of Swiss chalet, Tree-house and tavern-in-the-woods, somehow done tastefully. I took a seat, ordered a beer and was handed a menu. The menu was in the form of check list. It was in English and I was to tick the boxes next to the food I chose (pen provided). It's hardly traditional, although I can see it's use in preventing any "lost in translation" style hiccups when it comes to paying the bill. I ordered bread, Tirokafteri and Shrimp Saganaki. My starter, starter, the Tirokafteri was a spicy feta dip. It was tangy and sharp and was delicious scooped up the crispy bread it was served with. I hadn't finished my starter when my main arrived, which is the traditional way here. I prefer it this way, as I can pick at my starter through out the rest of my meal. The Shrimp Saganaki was delicious. The sauce was really rich and the shrimp were large, sweet and plentiful. I think Saganaki is my new favourite Greek food. I found out the name Saganaki comes from the double handled cast iron pan it is traditionally cooked in. As seems to be the case in some Cretian restaurants, there's no need to order a dessert. When, having have finished your meal and sat back to relax you are served a complementary treat. Here it was a chocolate cake and a banana cream tart. Of course this was served with a generous measure of Raki, the local fire-water. My whole experience here was great and if I could spell the name of this tavern I would highly...
Read moreOne of the most interesting restaurants I have eaten in for a while. The outside eating area is like something out of Alice in Wonderland, with interesting little ornaments and embellishments poking out of every nook and corner. There is an interesting play area for the kids too. But the decorations are not the main event. Remember Greek food from years ago, before it was commercialised and everybody cooked it? This is the food here. Traditional, cooked for Greeks not tourists, honest, fresh, tasty and incredible value for money. Be careful though, looking at the prices you would expect the Meze to be small, but the portions are generous so go with an appetite. Not a place for a rushed meal, take your shoes off, order a few plates and a glass of Oozo,...
