What can I say? I decided on eating at Katarena last week for my 40th birthday meal, boy did I choose wisely. The day of my birthday we walked to the taverna to look at the menu when George, the owner came out to greet us. We were sold before he even said anything but there was no way we were going anywhere else when he told us that his wife had put that day's special - Katerina Lamb in the oven that morning and that it would be ready for 7pm. George, his family and his staff embody that wonderful Cretan generosity and welcoming attitude that make you feel like you've been friends for years even the first time you meet them - it's something I've never experienced in any other place I've visited. George suggested that I check trip advisor to see who was the number 1 taverna in Stalis. I didn't need to, it was obvious. The evening of my birthday our party of 7 people, adults and children were treated to amazing food, flawless, friendly and generous service and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We loved it so much that we went back a second time and it was every bit as wonderful as the first time.

If you are in or are near to Stalis, do yourself a favour and visit Katerina. Do yourself an even bigger favour and order the special of the day, whatever it is. You won't be disappointed!

We visited here twice during our holiday. The food is amazing, George was so helpful in explaining the dishes to us and in particular to me as I am vegetarian, he told me I could mix up any of the starters for a main course if I wanted. The first evening we went I had baked shrimps, which were amazing!! The tomato sauce they were baked it was so delicious, my husband had fish which he said was beautiful, I forgot to take photos that time!! Second time we went I had baked feta and the spicy beans, both dishes were fab, so tasty and fresh. Hubby had the meatballs which George recommended, he said they were the best he has ever had. At the end of the meal they bring you a little warm sweet pie, again delicious and some of George's raki, which blows your head off, you have been warned!! Absolutely amazing.

This family run restaurant is an absolute gem. We turned up without booking and the restaurant was full, George made all efforts to seat us and although we had a wait it was well worth it. George is a phenomenal host and it’s evident that he and his family have pride in their establishment. Our needs were met to a more than satisfactory level, our food was excellent and the service second to none. It genuinely felt as though we were being welcomed into their home as their guests.
