Σουβλάκια ο Λευτέρης — Restaurant in Municipality of Nea Smyrni

I will share my experience of this place as a 17 year old Greek from Australia who came to Nea Smyrni in Athens Greece with my parents in 1976. My dear departed uncle Theodoros used to give me a couple of hundred drachmas and send me to Lefteris which was a 3 minute walk from where we lived in Odos Basileos Konstantinos round the corner from Platea Nea Smyrni. I used to walk back with 12 beautiful Souvlakis and a huge bag of "patates tyyanites" (chips) and change in my pocket. They were about 12 Drachmas each! I would come back to my uncles apartment with a huge bag of goodies and my father, mother uncle Theodoros and I would have a feast. They were the most beautiful thing I had ever eaten! I have beautiful memories of Lefteris Souvlatzithiko in Nea Smyrni! Those were great days, don't know how...

It is a known place to eat gyro. But they need to cook the kalamaki less because it was super dry. The problem in Greece is that they over cook their meats, unless they really know what they are doing. It is a classic gyro with no tzatziki but adding oil will make it better. Seasoning meat correctly from the start makes a big difference it is not the same when you add salt after it is cooked. That goes for any food. Outdoor tables/environment can look more welcoming and have a better sign for the restaurant because it is very confusing which section is theirs. One waiter was polite the other ok. When you deal with customers you have to have a smile and welcome them especially first timers. Would not really recommend unless you need to eat. It can also have better prices...

I ordered a burger,( Bifteki) instead I got 4 sticks of super dry tasteless burger meat and some re-fried French fries I ordered a coke w ice, the waiter said " we do not offer ice " ?? I had to wait for utensils and napkins w the food in front of me, I ordered another coke, I had to ask for it, 3 times! The same waiter was sweeping around some tables 50 feet away, throwing dust and garbage to a garbage can 3 feet away from a table, while people were eating on it !! Over all I do not think the person who manages the place, cares enough to offer a decent food w good service, at “Lefteris” I had restaurants and bars in So Cal, I would have never got away w such a quality. I will never go again...
