Hidden in an old courtyard beneath a canopy of vines, this place felt instantly like the right choice. Recommended by Lonely Planet and plenty of travelers, the restaurant’s shtick is to take traditional Cretan dishes and elevate them with modern touches. My taste buds squealed the moment I bit into wild green rolls, wrapped in chickpea flour and lightly fried. A simple yet clever combination. But the star of the day was the cooked rooster. Served on house-made pita, layered with cumin (thanks to one of the chefs being Pakistani), and topped with marinated roasted rooster strips, sweet potato purée, sweet potato crisps, and fresh greens — it was a festival in my mouth. To balance the richness, small balls of soft, mild cheese sat at the corners of the pita, giving the whole dish rhythm and relief. Even the pepper was carefully chosen — strong enough to bite, but never overpowering. Immaculate service, a glass of chilled raki straight from the freezer, and complimentary sweets sealed the deal.

OMG I suffered so much because I was still thinking of and badly missing the taste of the lamb chops even days after our meal here!!! Literally the best lamb chops on Crete, tender, with just the right amount of sauce and the sauce...so delicious and special!! I was trying to figure out what it is made of but was not successful, I wish I could have asked...more I wish we could have come here more, maybe next time when we travel to Crete again. We also had some special white wine, not really mine but worth a taste. Starter plate is wonderful because you can try 5 different traditional things, I believe stuffed wine leaves, smoked chicken, dakos, meat balls and pies. Food here is really high quality, well prepared and every taste of it is joyful, different from some touristic restaurants where the only good thing is funny service. If you like value quality food and cooking, this is the right place. Service and ambient is wonderful too! 补充一点:这里的口味非常适合像我一样嘴巴挑剔的中国人😜

I think this was the best restaurant we visited on Crete. The atmosphere is close to perfect — the interior is beautiful, and you’re seated in a courtyard where the ceiling is replaced by overgrown greenery. There’s a fountain in the middle, and a skinny grey cat casually walks around — all of this creates a truly magical ambiance. As for the food — we started with a Cretan salad, which was delicious. Every ingredient stood out in its own way. For the main course, we ordered moussaka and seafood pasta. The staff also recommended an incredibly tasty local wine. Everything was absolutely delicious. Regarding the service — the people here are very kind and down-to-earth. One detail that stood out was that they asked us when we’d like the main courses served, making sure we were finished with the starters first. This level of attention was a pleasant surprise. Thank you to the entire team!

Olympus Gods left their recipes here.

I don't know if all Gods were here, but surely Athena, Aphrodite and Zeus himself were in To Pigadi's kitchen. We had parked the car and started walking through the Old Town, not being hungry. Together with my wife I passed by the front of the restaurant and I thought I saw something on the menu: Rooster. Since we had not eaten rooster before on this trip, we entered here. We ordered Rooster on homemade pita bread (I don't get along well with tomatoes) and Lamb Chops. DELICIOUS!!! They are that kind of food that, even though you are full, you wish it would never end! And you also want to take away!!! It took some time for the order to arrive, but this way you can be sure that it is freshly made. Only dummies want to eat fast and good... (In Greece it is always recommended to ask before how big the dishes are and if you get an "medium" answer, you know what to expect..)))) So, we didn't eat appetizers and at the end we asked for dessert: Traditional Sfakia Pie and Traditional 'Xerotigano' (Cretan fried pasty). Delicious? Oh YES, indeed! Then we were sure that the Olympus Gods were here! Thank you very much, we had a wonderful dinner - even if it wasn't planned... Gina & Dan Romania

ps - the next time we return to Crete, we will definitely return here, at least for one evening, even if we live in the other corner of the island.

pps - I asked in Chania about "Sfakia Pie" and the answers were: "sorry, nobody knows how to make it here, but where did you eat?"

ppps - Finally here at To Pigadi, I understood why all the Greeks say that Cretan cuisine...

NEVER AGAIN!! We went to the restaurant with our family. As soon as we sat down, no one even came to bring us the menu. The staff is completely incompetent and very unfriendly! Our 13-year-old daughter was pressured by the only waitress who was taking orders to order the pasta. When it arrived, the pasta was completely mushy like soup and absolutely inedible. Our daughter very kindly and politely informed the waitress about this. But instead of simply offering her something else, the waitress yelled at our daughter. UNBELIEVABLE! Only after I, as an adult, asked the waitress not to shout, did she suddenly ask if our daughter wanted something else. But by then, our daughter was crying. After she had calmed down, she asked for fries instead. HERE COMES THE NEXT SHOCKER: The same waitress, who was supposed to bring the fries, suddenly said that the “offer had expired,” as she had “taken too long.” I wonder, what kind of unprofessional behavior is this? When the bill came, the pasta that my daughter didn’t eat was still on it. The restaurant owner yelled at me and said I had to pay for it. I have never experienced such behavior in any other restaurant. Even the guests next to us told us that they would now get up and leave in protest due to the restaurant owner’s behavior, which they did. There are far (!) better and much more customer-friendly restaurants in Crete. I also plan to report this incident to the tourism authorities...

I was seriously impressed by the food on offer at To Pigadi. I would say it is thoughtful and freshly prepared whilst being a bit more top end than the usual taverna fare. The apapki with mushrooms and peppers & cretan cheese rolls starters were delicious and like most restaurants good sized. Although well presented all the food is a proper meal! We shared a lovely fresh well balanced mousaka and for me the best of all. The 3rd salad on the menu describe as a cheese roll wrapped around roasted veg and salad with a honey & herb dressing. It sounded bizarrre, looked amazing and tasted so fresh and beautiful, top notch. With wine and complimentary cake we were very happy. This quality comes at a slightly higher price than some we have eaten at but we paid €44. In our view worth every euro and the price differerential is slight when you eat this quality. On top of this the venue is great with friendly staff, courtyard and street options but this seems like many in Rethymno. We choose the street and saw a lot of people flicking menus to choose. Get on line and pick some. Not sure about the rest of the town, as we had a short stay, but this was truly top standard it deserved 6 stars, ...
