Rethymnon Municipal Garden — Attraction in Municipality of Rethymnon

Rethymno, auch Rethimno oder vor längerer Zeit Rethymnon geschrieben ist die drittgrößte Stadt auf der griechischen Insel Kreta und liegt wie die Hauptstadt Iraklion (Heraklion) und Chania an der Nordküste und markiert die halbe Strecke zwischen diesen. Im Zentrum der Stadt befindet sich der öffentliche Park Dimotikos Kipos, der mit seinen Planzen und Bäumen zum Verweilen auf den Sitzmöglichkeiten einlädt. Er ist ein beliebter Treffpunkt für die Einheimischen, die am Abend nach einem anstrengenden Tag Erholung suchen. In dem kleinen Naturensemble kommt jeder zur Ruhe und findet Entspannung. Auf den Wegen flanieren Touristen wie auch Einwohner. In der Mitte des Parks bringt ein Springbrunnen an sehr heißen Tagen Abkühlung, sofern man den Kopf in den Wasserstrahl hält. Anfang Juli 2025 fand dort für eine Woche das Kretische Diätfestival statt. Eigens dazu liegen auf den Hauptwegen rote Teppiche. An vielen Ständen haben die Besucher die Möglichkeit, lokale Speisen und Getränke zu kosten wie auch die Handwerkskunst zu bestaunen und bei Gefallen zu erwerben. Jeden Abend treten bekannte kretische Musiker auf die Bühne und unterhalten mit ihren Gesängen das einheimische Publikum, die es sich auf den Stühlen um den Brunnen herum bequem gemacht haben. Mit herzlichen Applaus danken sie den Künstlern oder stimmen in die Liedtexte mit ein. Jung und alt zusammen an einem Ort sind durch die Folklore miteinander verbunden und leben diesen einmaligen Inselstolz. Angelo und Rula als Gastgeber zeigten mit Freude dieses Event und klatschten Beifall. Diese grüne Lunge der Stadt ist ein tolles Kleinod und freut sich über jeden Besucher. At many stalls, visitors have the opportunity to sample local food and drinks, as well as admire and, if they like, purchase handicrafts. Every evening, renowned Cretan musicians take to the stage and entertain the local audience, who have made themselves comfortable on the chairs around the fountain, with their songs. They thank the artists with warm applause or join in with the lyrics. Young and old together in one place are connected by folklore and embody this unique island pride. Visiting Rethymno on Crete's northern coast just an hour from the port cities of Chania an Heraklion, one can find the touristy old town section to be both exciting and at times a bit much. So after you visit the old town center, dip into the cool shade of the municipal garden, which has orderly walkways and trimmed foliage creating an inviting feel. There is a cafe on site, if you have need.

I happened to be visiting during an evening dance and music recital, featuring the both rhythmic and athletic Cretan dances and the energetic rhythms of the folk pieces shared.

Very nice city park with a lot of trees, especially a large variety of palm trees and some very nice flowers. In the middle you'll find a little water fountain... A nice playground for the kids that will keep them entertained while you enjoy a little break. Also, there are quite a few benches all around the parkif you want to sit.
