Raki Ba Raki is Avli's second restaurant, which unlike the other is not fine dining, but offers dishes based on local cuisine. Its tables are next to those of the main restaurant on the narrow street, and there are some on the other street, if you cross it from the inside.
See .... …. Lighting globes with hand-painted glass; …. Antique furniture, which is typical of Avli; …. There are several suggestions on the menu, baked in the oven - they are worth it!
Feel …. …. Very kind service, they ask you where you are from, make a small talk, they are interested in whether you feel good with them.
Hear …. …. Ancient Greek folklore, some Spanish folklore, very nice. .......
Smell .... …. Very appetizing local spices in the oven-baked vegetables served with the fresh fish.
Taste .... …. Great pasta with shrimps, a huge amount, the whole family can eat, very well flavored with the sauce! … The Greek salad has very tasty products, there are even zucchini and fennel; …. When you order bread, they bring you white and black, a separate small jar of olive oil, another with spiced salt and our family's favorite fava puree. …. The wine by glass is from a bottle and is excellent. I tried rose wine from the local variety Kotsifali, which is very slightly fruity and mineral.

Read moreI had a lot of reservations leaving this review as I think “one” of the staff was really nice and the restaurant kindly offers complimentary halva as dessert when you finish and the location is super cute and charming; but food was majorly disappointing. We ordered many different items including the cuttlefish, the chicken pilaf rice, the mushroom pie, pasta with chicken and some appetizers and to be honest none of us liked our food. The pie was very salty, the pasta was really a 5/10 and the chicken pilaf was more like a risotto with chicken that smelled horrible. The cuttlefish stew was however perhaps the worst thing Ive had in years…. Like I’m not sure if there’s anyone responsible for the ingredients and the way they serve the food but we were 8 people and none of us could finish our bite, it looked tasted and smelled extremely disgusting, the plate had splashes all over and the fish was so chewy I had to spit it out, even the sauce was foul, I strongly recommend removing it from the menu and sue whoever thought it was good to mix cuttle with this many herbs in a stew! Apart from the food; service was slow and the main waiter looked so bothered like we were interrupting him from something important and was in a hurry; we kept having to flag him down and he didn’t even smile once! The bill comes with the default option of paying a 10% tip which I found weird and had to manually override it to say no we don’t want to tip. Finally I just want to say we ate at Rethymno 3 times and other options were miles better and I was negatively surprised by...
Read moreI was looking for an authentic Cretan restaurant and found Raki Ba Raki online. I honestly was more so aiming for the restaurant next to it (Avil) but tried this instead. I ordered a drink, a mocktail even, yet it took over 20 minutes and the table next to me who came after me already got her food. The drink was also 90% ice and took me 4 sips to finish, and it cost half the price of a main dish. I ordered a dip and this took another 15 minutes of which I tried to ask for an order of bread with it and took me time to track someone down and then get it delivered. I barely ever saw my server since I sat down. She didn’t come to check and there were other people who took my order and I presumed were helping. The other table next to me who got their appetizer after me got their food before me and it was the same order as mine so I am not sure why mine was taking longer. The server eventually noticed I was upset at the end and tried to bring me a dessert. When I said I was full she packed it up along with my other food. She did seem apologetic and tried to fix the situation which I appreciated. I will be honest and say I felt like because I was solo I may have been getting less attention. While the food was pretty good and I would enjoy it with better service I am still unsure how worth it is going for dinner even earlier before the rush. If you want a super long drawn out dinner with little interaction with the server for the trade off for pretty good food then you might...
