Like many others, we didn’t expect to find a modern interpretation of traditional Cretan cuisine in the small village of Frangokastelo on the southern coast. But here it is — a family-run place with a vision, turning local ingredients into beautifully presented and surprisingly complex dishes.

The terrace is lovely, with mountains rising on one side and a strip of deep blue sea on the other. No road noise, just a calm setting to enjoy the food. The menu shifts with the seasons and whatever ingredients are freshest, and even the olive oil is pressed by the family themselves.

Highlights for us: dakos (where I actually preferred the crumbs more than the cheese, which was an unexpected twist), octopus boiled in red wine with beetroot salad, and a sheep meat burger. Everything was flavorful, balanced, and plated with care.

We finished with a complimentary crumble dessert and homemade lemonade — small details that reinforce the impression of thought-through cooking and professional service.

It's says that food could change your perspective, the way you understand reality. This was not the case. This place didn't deserve 5 star. We waited 15 minutes, only to get water, we got the menu's only after I asked for them (another 10 minutes). This review is for the waiter-you'll say it was a full restaurant. It wasn't. A customer couldn't wait 15 mins for the menu another 15 to get the order. Another 30 to get the starter(cold, premade but amazing) and a full hour and a half later, to get the main course. Yes, I took it personally - I didn't wear "elegant beach clothes" and I don't have 50+ yo, so for you, a young couple didn't count. Too bad for the idea of modernized cretan food. I would fly 26 hours just to have this experience again! A perfect blend of a creative take on local dishes, with local and high quality ingredients, set in a peaceful and beautiful landscape. We were so lucky to find this restaurant on our stay in Crete. Also being our first time in Greece, there is no better welcoming to the food and wine that this island has to offer! The owners were so friendly and attentive - they really care about their business and go above and beyond for their customers.
