Was looking for a seafood place for the evening and someone at the beach this afternoon recommended I try Babis & Popi tavern in Frangokastello .
A great family run restaurant with plenty of parking across the street made it easy to get the car parked .
Upon arrival restaurant was packed , but the kind staff quickly assembled a table and brought it for me to the outside patio . Score !
Started with a ouzo since I wanted seafood this evening and moved on to review the menu . Many choices for appetizers and main entrees , so I asked my server his opinion.
Octopus salad was the first recommendation as a starter appetizer . So fresh and light ! Something I had not tried before prepared like this . Usually octopus is grilled or lemon vinegar . This was perfectly seasoned and prepared with fresh herbs that brought the dish to life . Perhaps my favorite appetizer on the entire trip . Bravo guys !
For a main I wanted something fresh and not frozen … so I got recommended either the tuna or the swordfish. Both happen to be on the catch of the day on the menu . I opted for the swordfish and it was delicious. Well prepared and cooked perfectly , accompanied by a light yogurt sauce with olive oil and lemon and a grilled sweet pepper .
Finally as is traditional in Crete , a raki and a watermelon were the ideal ending to a summer light seafood dinner .
Great service - great food - great vibes .
Will be back next time...

The service is friendly at this vine-covered terrace. The attentive waiter keeps looking around to see if he can be of service. The menu is quite extensive with several types of breakfast, fish, grilled dishes, pizza and Greek specialties. We ordered a pizza tuna, lamb chops, Greek salad and tzatziki. We get a carafe of cold water on the table. The white wine is fine, just what you can expect when you order house wine. The lamb chops were very good and well-seasoned, the fries are crispy. The pizza has a bit too thick a bottom and is loaded with cheese and tuna. A pizza with a thinner bottom and more tomato sauce would have been better. It is very filling. The tzatziki tastes good and has plenty of garlic. After dinner we get a big bottle of cold raki on the table and we end up going back home tipsy. Disadvantage: dry bread that is not in one piece, and this while there is wonderfully tasty bread for sale in the village...

We went there two times and never got disappointed. The waiter, obviously the son of one of the owners, was always friendly and really funny. We loved his humorous and kind way of serving us. The fresh fish was presented to you before they prepare it. We had grilled grouper, sea bream from the oven, tuna tartare and vegetables stuffed with rice and sea food. Everything was absolutely delicious and I can especially recommend the grilled fish for you can really taste the notion of smoky flavour form the grill. It combines wonderfully with the tender taste of the fish meat. If you love fish and you are in the area of Frangokastello you should definitely...
