Unfortunately, we can't confirm all the positive reviews. From entering the restaurant, we didn't feel the warm-hearted greek hospitality. We first ordered house wine, the meze for two and a cucumber-tomato salad. The wine came in a bottle as shown in many reviews before. The bottle itself didn't appear so hygienic/clean, the wine was not according to our taste. Afterwards, we ordered the mains: the pastitsada and the lamb kleftiko. We wanted to stick to traditional dishes at this family-run tavern. The owner then approached us twice, that this might be a little too much food for us and asked whether we might want to cancel either one of the main dishes or the meze. On our question, whether he could just make the mains a little smaller so we can have a taste of everything, he just replied that it might be okay for us if we're hungry - which obviously did not answer the question. In the end we agreed to skip the salad. Two minutes later, the salad was still served together with the meze. The meze mainly consisted of four pieces of grilled and, unfortunately, very dry minced meat patties and also contained some Tsatsiki and very little beetroot - not what we expected from a good mix of greek appetizers. Although being cooked with bones, the lamb in the kleftiko also was very dry. Furthermore, one piece contained some green coloured fat/tissue. The owner said, this is due to the stamps on the skin of greek lamb meat. Maybe, however I didn't feel like it was coming from the outer skin and it was just not appetizing. Finally, the pastitsada appeared to be a dark coloured beef stew (instead of veal) put on spaghetti. The appearance and taste were just like stifado without the onions and had nothing to do with the slightly spicy, red-coloured pastitsada with makkaroni we tasted before in Corfu town. Luckily, the taste of the stifado was quite nice, being the reason for the two stars in this review.
The owner clearly realized that we were not satisfied with what we got served. There was no single apology, no dessert on the house or anything alike. Just some weird explanations. Of course, we still paid the full price. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things and the grilled items on the menu are worth a visit. However, with our experience we will definitely not go...
Read moreCould not believe this was rated as a 4.9 star restaurant.
The server was weird and rude, or maybe drunk/high. The first thing he asked us, was to consider going to another restaurant, with cooler temperature(!!!).
All taverns we have visited so far in Corfu immediately brought us bread and water. In this one - nothing. We had to ask for water after our food arrived.
Dogs kept getting in the yard and the server kept coming and shouting at them to go away.
The interior showed clear signs of neglect.
I could have forgiven all of the above if the food had been as good as the reviews said. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. The only one dish that was good is the pastitsada.
Everything else was a trainwreck. The soffrito was made with low quality meat. I doubt it was even beef. It was almost completely tasteless.
One of our other main dishes came with half the portion missing.
The tomato/cucumber salad was disgusting. It had an extremely unpleasant smell and taste. It was an insult to serve something like that to customers.
I cannot, in good conscience, give this place more than 1 out of 5, not with these prices. Not even at half the prices. Even 1/5 feels like a stretch.
P.S After reading the rest of the reviews, it is clear the owners put their friends and family on the task of giving the place...
Read moreWe loved this place. Such a lovely family-run restaurant. The owner's wife cooks delicious homemade greek dishes, especially amazing chicken soup, lamb chops, chocolate cake & orange tarts (from local orange trees). They both are such lovely hosts and very generous. Very reasonably priced and delicious authentic greek food - for 2 people including 2 glasses local wine, starters and main dishes for about 30 Euros! We loved this place so much that we came twice here during our 4 days stay even though we have planned to go to a different taverna everyday. And each time they offered us the super tasty chocolate cake & orange tart on the house!!!! The ambience is very local-like with many local people around watching football & playing billiard. But it also has a certain elegance with a beautiful garden-like veranda infront. If you stay in Messonghi you shouldn't miss...
