We would love to rate Mazi a 5, but there is one glaring and unfortunate shortcoming: they allow smoking. The setting is the type of elegant one that one would find at the best and finest of restaurants in Greece. But what makes dining at this otherwise top-notch place is that they allow smoking. When we dined there for dinner, the people at the table on one side of us were smoking cigarettes, and a person at the table on the other side of us was smoking a cigar! I can’t think of a better way to ruin a wonderful experience of excellent food and drink than to allow smoking. This is not a taverna or kafenion; it tries to hold itself out as a high end culinary experience. We have dined at higher end restaurants throughout Greece, and none of them permit smoking, as it just ruins the ambiance and takes away from the experience and the food. We complained to the manager and she was not interested in our suggestion that this takes away from what they themselves are trying to accomplish. Her response was that it is their policy to allow smoking (at least limit it to a certain section!). It’s a shame. Other fine restaurants in Greece simply do not permit smoking. Until Mazi corrects this outdated practice they cannot count themselves among those fine dining establishments. Sadly, we cannot recommend because of this big...

Read moreThe crowds in the Greek islands during August can be a bit overwhelming. Too many people stuffed next to each other and too much noise. So you can imagine our surprise when we entered this amazing, open air restaurant built in the court of an old ceramic factory, only 50 meters from the Syros municipality house (right at the center of the city). It’s like a secret garden, with vines coming down from the ceiling and touching your face, making the effect even more enchanting. The very friendly bartender in Mazi prepared our cocktails while we waited for our table to be prepared. We had four cocktails and they were all very well prepared. Then we were treated to a very satisfying dinner. I would definitely suggest you try the Bourdeto, which is a traditional recipe usually found in the Ionian Islands. It was such a treat that we literally licked the dish clean. For another typical Greek dish with a twist, you may also try the Greek sushi. We finished our meal with the Mousse Baklava, delicious! This was an unforgettable experience, thank you to Mrs Yvonne the chef...
