Mediterraneo: A Culinary Gem on the Gaios Waterfront Rating: ★★★★½ Nestled along the picturesque harbour of Gaios, where elegant yachts gently bob in the Ionian Sea, Mediterraneo stands out as a beacon of fine dining on Paxos. While the island is rich with charming, traditional tavernas, this restaurant elevates the local culinary scene, offering a sophisticated experience centered on the treasures of the sea. From the moment you are seated at your crisp, linen-draped table by the water's edge, it’s clear this is a place that takes its craft seriously. The ambiance is one of understated elegance—perfect for a romantic evening or a special celebration. The gentle clinking of glasses and the soft lapping of waves against the quay provide the perfect soundtrack. The menu is a testament to the bounty of the surrounding waters. While there are options for all palates, the fish dishes are the undeniable stars. We were presented with the "catch of the day" on a silver platter—a stunning selection of glistening red scorpionfish, sea bream, and grouper. We opted for a magnificent whole-grilled sea bass, which was prepared with masterful simplicity, seasoned with local herbs, lemon, and exceptional Paxiot olive oil. It was impeccably fresh, flaky, and bursting with delicate flavour. The starters were equally impressive, particularly a carpaccio of local tuna that was melt-in-your-mouth tender. Complementing the food is a thoughtfully curated wine list that proudly showcases Greek viticulture. The staff were knowledgeable. Their service throughout the evening was attentive, professional, and warm, striking the perfect balance between fine-dining formality and genuine Greek hospitality. One must be prepared, however, for the price tag. Mediterraneo is unapologetically one of the most expensive dining experiences on the island. A meal here is a significant indulgence, not a casual weeknight dinner. Verdict: For those seeking an exceptional meal to mark a special occasion, Mediterraneo is an absolute must. It delivers on its promise of exquisite seafood, wonderful local wines, and impeccable service in an unforgettable setting. While the cost is high, the quality and the experience justify the splurge for a truly memorable...

Spyros, the owner is a legend. He comes round to your table and takes you through the menu, providing his recommendations. Most items are tempting, but since we were only 2 people for dinner we went for 2 starters and 2 mains.
We started with a Tuna Carpaccio with Cirtus. I haven't had any seafood carpaccio with such balance of flavours, the pairing of the citrus with the fish was incredible. Our second starter was effectively a bruschetta with aubergines and anchovies. Again, a simple dish, but the balance of flavours was remarkable.
For mains we tried a Bourdeto with Pasta. The fish of the day for the bourdeto was Monkfish, which is one of my favourite for such dishes. The Bourdeto was definitely the highlight of the meal, because it was the best execution of the dish I've ever had. It might not look as appealing (it is effectively a traditional home made dish), but again really flavoursome, rich and well balanced, with the fish being expertly cooked and the spices complementing it and not masking other flavours. Additionally, we had a tuna steak, which tasted really fresh. The accompanying salad was refreshing and tasty.
Overall, we really enjoyed our meal. It was great to learn as well that all ingredients are responsibly sourced, which is extremely important particularly for the fish. This is definitely no restaurant like most others, and Spyros is the worthy architect of this establishment.

Read moreI'm frequently traveling across mediterranean and trying restaurants. Emphasis is on service, quality and quantity of food. We were greeted by Spyros, the only waiter who described the food in detail (thank you for that). My choice (sword fish filet) was really good. Remarks:
Other dishes on our table (total of 7 people) were mediocre. Price per such small portion is in the range of 18-25 Euro. Expected to have at least 30-40% bigger portion Beside of the delicious fish, the side dishes were basic coleslaw or similar. I understand it is high season, but please be more creative. Kerkyras beer IPA bottle of less than 0.33 cl priced at 11 Euro, purchase price 2 Euro. Shame on you for that!, this is not more than 5 Euro in restaurants in the whole Greece, category neutral. 7 people at the table, 4 pieces of bread. Really? Offer from the house, karpousi (watermelon) 4.5 pieces for 7 people. Again, really?
I was lead by recommendation of frequent eater (Thessalonikian person), who was eating in the restaurant several times. We have similar choice in food, but this time I must say that the restaurant didn't deserve high evaluation and I don't recommend it.
@owner of the restaurant; please don't be upset about my comment. It is intended to challenge you to be better next time we are in Gaios. I'll read the comments and hopefully be your guest in...
