We originally planned to dine at a nearby place called Fish Art, but the line was too long, so we walked a bit further and ended up at Taverna Akrogiali, and honestly, it turned out to be a pretty good surprise. We arrived around 7 PM, and although the place was quite busy, the staff was friendly and welcoming. It took about 15–20 minutes for our food to arrive, which felt reasonable given the crowd. The service was warm and polite, though their English could use a little improvement to help communication flow more easily for tourists.
The Food
We ordered three different dishes Giouvetsi (mine): The meat was tender and the orzo was well cooked, but the overall flavor was lacking. The sauce had little to no taste, and the dish was under salted, something I realized too late was up to me to fix at the table. The portion was decent, and the presentation was okay, but this one didn’t really stand out for me in terms of flavor. Honest personal rating: 2.5/5 Gyros (my mother’s): I tried a bite of the meat, which was tasty but slightly dry. It came with fries, fresh tomato slices, red onion, tzatziki, and some pieces of pita. The sauce was definitely the highlight m, both my mother and I agreed on that. Portion wise, it was balanced, not overly generous, but enough. The plating wasn’t anything special, but the dish overall was solid. Mother’s rating: 3.5/5 Pork Souvlaki (my father’s): Probably the best of the three. The pork was juicy, properly seasoned, and cooked just right, not dry, not chewy. It came with fries, a side salad, and a slice of pita. Presentation, again, was not impressive, but the flavor and quality were definitely there. My father was very happy with his choice, and I’d agree. Father’s rating: 4/5
Atmosphere
The location is lovely, the tavern sits by the sea, and although we didn’t get a table with a direct view of the water, even from the back you can enjoy the fresh air and a calming ambiance. It’s a nice balance between lively and peaceful, with a mix of locals and tourists. The decor is authentic, simple, and well kept. Overall, it felt comfortable and genuine.
Final Thoughts
The best part of our visit was the overall food experience, not necessarily the giouvetsi for me, but my parents were quite pleased with their meals. There’s definitely room for improvement in terms of presentation and English communication, but for a traditional Greek taverna with fair prices and a laid back vibe, Akrogiali delivers what you’d expect. Would I recommend it? Yes, to anyone looking for something authentic, decently priced, and unpretentious. It’s not fine dining, but it’s honest Greek cooking by the sea, and that has...
Read moreThey don’t deserve even the one star that i gave them. We went around 9 pm at their location, sat down at a table pretty quickly but then had to wait for around 30 minutes to have someone take our order. The place was full, but most of the people were already eating, they weren’t really serving someone to say that we could understand the delay. We had to attention them around 20 minutes after we ordered that they didn’t bring anything to the table (the papper, cutlery or napkins). They brought the food very slowly, 20 minutes for the first person meal, another 20 for 4 more plates… we had to ask twice how much longer for 2 pastas, a ribeye and some lamb chops. 1 hour later the pastas were at the table, the lamb chops came too, but the ribeye… nowhere to be seen (it takes 8 minutes to cook a steak…. so to wait for more than an hour before going to talk with a manager i think is more than reasonable). Went inside to cancel the order and i was telling them im not gonna pay for it (by now everyone ate and they wanted the bill) the manager, a very angry man, tried to find excuses such as we were to busy, told him i dont care of his excuses, 1 hour is too long, he then proced to say: “YOU BE QUIET OR OUT, GET OUT AND YOU ARE GONNA PAY”. Never in my life have experienced such treatment. If you know you cant handle so many tables, dont put out so many, dont tell the people to sit and just wait, or apologise… thats the least you could have done. Horrible expectations, horrible service and the owner…...
