Burger King Allee — Restaurant in Budapest

We had an extremely disappointing and upsetting experience at this Burger King branch. We waited over 20 minutes for our food due to a mistake made by one of the staff members, who mixed up our order with someone else’s. We paid for the order we believed was ours—as is standard procedure in most restaurants where payment is made before receiving the food—but were later told that it actually belonged to someone else. This confusion was entirely due to the staff’s mishandling of the orders.

What made the situation even worse was the attitude of the worker involved. She apologized to the Hungarian customers, but not to us—seemingly because we are foreigners. She spoke in Hungarian, assuming we would not understand, and said that the mistake was our fault for standing there while the food “wasn’t ready yet.” However, that is standard practice: customers wait for their food after ordering and paying.

What she didn’t realize is that I have studied in Hungary for several years and understood every word she said. Her tone was dismissive and disrespectful, and she even laughed at us. I strongly believe her behavior was discriminatory and rooted in racism. It is deeply upsetting to see such treatment still happening in Hungary in this day and age.

All we ordered were some nuggets, yet we were left waiting for 20 minutes due to an employee’s incompetence and then treated with blatant disrespect. It was especially hurtful because this experience occurred on my friend’s birthday—what should have been a joyful and positive occasion was completely ruined.

This was, without a doubt, the worst experience I have ever had at a Burger King anywhere in the world. I felt disrespected, humiliated, and targeted because of my background. I ordered only an oreo shake. I waited 10 minutes, until an oreo shake was done, but to my surprize, someone 3 numbers after me received it. I then had to wait another two minutes for another to be made, and another two minutes while someone else was ordering and paying. During these last two minutes, my frozen drink sat by the burger heating slide thing, and melted significantly on the side that faced the heating unit. Unfortunately, a significant drawback of this establishment is the lack of a self-ordering system. From my perspective, having such a system is essential, especially for customers who aren't fluent in Hungarian. This system would streamline the ordering process for them and for others who want to make precise selections or customize their orders. On the other hand, the lack of an accessible menu makes ordering difficult. Additionally, prepping and holding food in advance can compromise meal quality.
