Having heard great reviews of Go Native I reserved a place to celebrate wifey's birthday hoping to have a great dining experience as well as do some shopping in this multidimensional place which has a clothing studio, knick knacks for home, some organic food products and interesting stationery.
Having had a late and heavy breakfast, we wanted to order something light and share, so kicked off the meal with a plant based fried mince dumplings for me and wifey and a Bhaji Margherita pizza for my daughter.
For the Pizza there was an option of wheat or multigrain and we chose the wheat version. It had a very nice Indian touch with the bhaji on the base replacing the tomato paste, with an overload of mozzarella cheese and the basil replaced with chopped coriander. The thin crust pizza was enjoyed by the whole family, the house made tomato sauce on the side was extremely fresh and delicious, they should package and sell it, that good.
The plant based mince was from the brand Blue Tribe and they were tossed in a very indian spicy onion and black pepper masala. When I heard fried dumplings, I was hoping for a pan fried chinese dumplings, but it was more of an indian meatball that came on a bed of perfectly fried onions in red chilli peppers with a fried noodle net and a deep fried curry leaf stem. Moving away from the dissapointment on what I expected, the taste was actually very good, it was something that me and wifey enjoyed, but the kiddo avoided and kept being busy with the pizza.
I did order a #dads_hack artisanal craft kombucha in ginger lime flavour, something that I did not enjoy much, and could not finish it too. I don't attribute that to Go Native as they were just selling the product and not bottling it.
As mains for me and wifey I decided to order the Go Native thali hoping to try a variety of dishes in a single plate. As it was a limited portion we decided to share, starting with a spiced buttermilk that we very good, a sabudana vada, that was a bit soggy, with a chapati that was soft and well made to be had with dal, and a paneer subzi. To accompany the dal there was a small bowl of rice and some beans and carrot fry, and to accompany the rice there was some rasam.
The touted highlight of the Thali was supposedly the Vegetarian Donne Biryani with yam (meat)balls, with thes. For someone who is a non-vegetarian, this pulao did not cut to the expectation of a donne biryani. It was more like a pudina rice, primarily the seeraga samba rice was probably replaced with some other variety and a lack of fragrance from the spiced typically used in a biryani, vegetarian or not. To top it all, the yam (meat)balls were undercooked and had a very peculiar taste, so we avoided completing it. The accompanying beetroot raita was good and cooling, but did not go very well with donne biryani.
On the side there was a delicious fresh salad and papad too, but the thali overall was very impressive just because of the vegetarian Donne Biryani, rest everything was good and was very homestyle.
It was surprising to see how the thali was so popular and almost everyone around us were ordering it, but not sure what went wrong with ours or with your high expectations from Go Native and we were there for the celebrations.
We might visit them to shop at the clothing studio or to pick up some nice incense that we picked up in this visit, but maybe not to the restaurant, at least not...
Read moreThe entrance that resembles the ruins of a building has always caught my attention while I was on my way to Phoenix Market City. So I thought of exploring this place with my professor friend Dr.Uttam Patil for a Sunday afternoon meal. The entrance has beautiful plants, a pathway filled with exotic decorations, and a dining area that gives classy vibes with its aesthetic looks.
The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating arrangements. The pleasant weather in Bengaluru led us to decide to dine indoors and luckily we had an empty table waiting for us right at the entrance.
We were attended by Mr.Ujjwal who handovered us the menu. We took our own sweet time to understand the simple dishes which were described in simple english. Since my friend wanted to eat a thali, we decided to have a go native special thali and a sweet potato sabudana tikki chaat. To my surprise there were 2 styles of thalis available - north and south, which had a separate menu, a color printed menu. to be on safer side we decided to go with south indian thali, but there was another option ragi ball or red rice roti in the south style as well. We settled down for red rice roti. 15 minutes for thali and 10 minutes for the latter, said Mr.Ujjwal and we agreed.
Even though the dining area is spacious with air conditioning, we felt suffocation while we waited for our order. Meanwhile, I explored the store section of the restaurant, and surprisingly it had a cooler air compared to that of the dining area.
The sweet potato sabudana tikki chaat did arrive quite earlier than the mentioned ETA. It didn't appear impressive w.r.t looks, there wasn't any efforts put in terms of presentation including the selection of a plate. The two layers of sabudana tikkis with lots of khara boondi sprinkled all over it failed to impress and felt It wasn't worth 335/-.
Then the south thali arrived after an eternity. The thali did look interesting in terms of presentation and beautiful hues of the dishes. But unfortunately most of the dishes were cold and had lost their freshness. The only memorable dish in the entire dish was a beat raita kinda stuff.
Somehow we managed to finish the entire thali in the suffocating ambiance . Even though the staff tried to adjust the air conditioner settings, it didn't help much, I guess it's because of the entrance door which was wide open.
Had a lot of expectations with this place but didn't go as per our expectations, it might be due to either selection of the dish or selection of the table. Whereas I had an amazing experience at lavelle road Go native just the...
Read moreGo Native is pretty popular when it comes to healthy, sustainable and delicious food. Not only food, but even their alternative clothing for fast fashion has been raved among people.
When it comes to food, they use organic, locally sourced produce that directly hits from farm to table. They take carbon footprint of food into consideration too hence use coconut sugar over jaggery and honey which is over white sugar.
The food, intricately prepared with lot of thought into it truly reflects on the plate. I thoroughly loved my experience here. Lot of vegan and gluten-free options too. Also do note that I preferred to try out small portions in order to try out many dishes. The actual portion size is much more.
Few of my recommendations would be
Aloo patha chaat is something that shouldn’t be missed! It’s a MUST TRY. Airy, crispy fried palak with aloo, chutneys, sev and pomegranate. Mouth watering.
Maddur Vade Bites is another dish that I loved. The Maddur vada was paired with hummus, pineapple salsa and chutney. A combination that no one would think of but they pulled it off at Go Native and it was scrumptious. Never thought it’ll work together but it was a harmony.
Sabudana Moongphali Thalipeeth. Soft, squishy sabudana with crunchy groundnuts and chutney was delicious
Cumin Beetroot and Feta salad with candied walnuts. I personally love the salads and particularly the vinaigrette’s at Go native, it’s full of flavour and has the right balance of sweet and sour
Paneer Buddha Bowl, Carrot and dill paddu, Rasmalai, Hydrating booster drink, Cucumber buttermilk are other things that taste really good too.
I also want to appreciate the staff there. They are attentive and ask you for your feedback too. Mr Suraj took care of our table and did a fantastic...
