Suryawanshi is an authentic Maharashtrian eatery located in the EPIP Zone in Whitefield area, and is very approachable for people working in and around ITPL.
Food (5/5) : This was my first experience with Maharashtrian cuisine, so I took the intelligent decision to take a Marathi friend of mine to validate the authenticity of dishes. Luckily, we were a mixed group of vegetarians and non-vegetarians, so I got to taste all kinds of servings. The menu offers a-la carte and thalis and we went for the latter.
Solo chicken thali : This comprises of chicken gravy (3-4 pieces), 3 fulkas, bowl of rice, 3 kinds of side gravies, also known as rasas, namely sol rasa, tambda rasa and pandhra rasa. This was served with fried papas, cut onions (kaanda) and green chilli pickle better known as thecha in Maharashtra. I loved the chicken gravy as it was made in Kolhapuri style with just the right amount of spices to make you reach for a glass of water but not the tissues. Sol rasa is a pink coloured savoury gravy made from kokam which helps in digestion. Tambda in marathi means red and the dish derives it’s name from the colour only and was the highlight for me. The pandhra rasa is an off-white gravy made from coconut milk and has a unique taste which goes well with the other contents of the thali.
The other thalis tried were the mutton gala thali which replaces the chicken with a mutton gravy and an egg curry in the solo chicken thali, rest of the constituents being the same.
The fish thalis are the signature Maharashtrian non vegetarian dishes with a surmai (king fish) and Bangda fish served with a rich savoury gravy which practically melts in the mouth. It is served with a fried fish in case of gala fish thali.
The best thing about the thalis was the portion size. It was just appropriate which didn’t leave us asking for more and also not wasting anything was served.
Ambience (4/5) : It is very rare that I would rate a restaurant with such basic ambience with such high rating, but their idea of culinary experience is primarily focusing on the food and only food and making sure that all the other basic needs for dine-in are catered. They have an open kitchen concept where one can easily see their dishes being prepared with utmost care and keeping hygiene in mind.
Service (4/5) : Nothing specifically wrong with the service but the food could have been served a bit quicker considering that we were the only ones there and they took good 15 minutes to serve thalis which usually are 70% pre-prepared.
Value for money (4/5) : Honestly, it is a bit on the higher side as the non veg thali starts from 250+ INR with fish thalis crossing 400+ but there are very few Maharashtrian cuisine restaurants in Bangalore and it is somewhat fair for them to...
Read moreAbsolutely loved it!!! The aamras was silky and perfect, the puris piping hot and crisp and the mango lassi was the best! We ordered the puran poli thali...which was scrumptious and sufficient for two of us. The potato sabji was so delicious, we needed a second round. The puran polis themselves came dripping out with thoop, and were heavenly. Waiting for the next visit to try the non veg!
The muttony update: couldn't resist trying out the non veg option within a week of the first visit. We ordered the mutton thali. The food was to die for! Perfectly succulent pieces of mutton and a creamy buttery kheema were accompanied with rassas. The special for that summery day was a lovely aam panna and we were lucky to get a plate of fresh piping hot kanda bhajiyas. 😍😍
Came here for a team lunch and the spread was excellent! Each dish was delicious. Service is a tad bit slow, but worth the wait. The must tries are mutton shavji, mutton kheema pav and rava fried prawns! In desserts the aamras is super fresh this time of the year! If in a large group, I'd suggest you call earlier and book the...
Read moreI love their indiranagar branch, somehow I had a very average experience in this branch. The ambiance is very generic, they have more seating in this outlet but there was lot of construction going on and thus all the work material was dumped around. The menu is same but the portion sizes are definitely smaller here as they use different crockery/ plates here. Had the kheema pav, tasted good but portion was tiny as compared to indiranagar branch. Pav was served cold at first, then had to ask to replace with warm pavs. Also the chicken sukka was same quantity wise, tasted decent. Vada Pav was good and the Egg khandoli was the better dish of what we ordered. Pricing feels high here due to the experience and portion size. Didn't get to click more pics as we were in rush. Service is slow, there were 2 staff who prepare the food also themselves in the kitchen so need to call everytime if want to order.
