I have visited Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavana in Balepete many times, and every visit has been a satisfying and delicious experience. This eatery offers some of the best traditional South Indian dishes, and it has earned its place as a favorite in the area. On my recent visit, I had Masala Dosa, Sagu Masala Dosa, Idli, Uddina Vada, Sambar, and Dumroot. Each dish was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection.
Let's start with the Idli and Uddina Vada combination, which is a classic here. The Idlis are fluffy, soft, and perfectly steamed, with just the right level of fermentation. They are the ideal texture—not too dense, yet firm enough to soak up the sambar and chutneys. Paired with the Uddina Vada, which is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, this combination is a treat. The Vada has a nice crunch when you bite into it, with a light yet slightly spongy interior. When dipped into the sambar, the experience is heavenly. The sambar here is one of the best I’ve tasted across all of Bangalore. It's rich, aromatic, and has a perfect balance of tanginess, spice, and savory flavors. The flavor of roasted spices, tamarind, and a hint of jaggery makes it stand out as exceptional, and it complements the idli and vada perfectly.
Next, the Masala Dosa and Sagu Masala Dosa are both iconic dishes at Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavana. The Masala Dosa is golden, crispy, and thin, with a well-seasoned potato filling inside. The filling is mildly spiced, with just the right mix of turmeric, mustard seeds, and curry leaves, making it a savory delight. It’s crispy around the edges, and the dosa itself has a great crunch without being overly greasy.
The Sagu Masala Dosa takes it a step further with a different filling. The sagu (vegetable curry) is slightly spiced with a medley of vegetables like carrots, peas, and potatoes, and it brings a comforting, wholesome flavor to the dish. The contrast between the crispy dosa and the soft, flavorful filling is just perfect.
I also tried the Dumroot, a slightly less common but equally delicious dish. It’s a flavorful, mildly spiced rice dish that is aromatic and flavorful, adding a nice variation to the meal.
Overall, Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavana offers an authentic South Indian experience, with every dish being crafted with care and attention to detail. The sambar alone makes it a must-visit place for anyone who loves South Indian food, and the Masala Dosa and Idli-Vada combination are...

Read moreUdupi Sri Krishna Bhavan is a century old legendary place nestled in Old Bengaluru. Still going strong and serving delicious food!
Tucked away in the narrow by-lanes of Chikpete is this 100 year old eatery, setup in 1926, by migrants from Kota, Udupi. It’s a short walk from the Chikpete metro station.
As you step inside, the history of the place hits you first. The fans, the wall clocks, the furniture; everything is from a bygone era. It’s an old world charm that you rarely find these days. Reminded me of the old Parsi cafes in Mumbai.
To be honest, I just wanted to see this place once being from Udupi, myself. I reached around noon. The menu is primarily South Indian vegetarian. Ordered a Sagu Dosa, for which this place is famous. Sadly they don’t serve any dosas at noon. So ended up ordering a plate of idli/wada sambar and a filter coffee.
The sambar is really good and I can see how this eatery set the standard for the sweet tangy Bengaluru sambar. Although, the sambar here is at a different level. There’s a hint of cassia/cinnamon that perfectly compliments the sweetness. All masalas are home ground it seems. It shows in the final product. Lucky for us, they also serve seconds!
The coffee was more on the watery side but the filter decoction was quite good. Though I can’t sing praises of the coffee like the sambar! It was just ok.
Service is fast and servers are extremely polite.
Would love to return here someday around evening time and sample their dosas as well.
Definitely try this place out, if you’re a Bengalurean. Certainly if you’re...
