On the ground floor of an imposing Hyatt Regency, Kolkata, lays behind a glass facade, Waterside Cafe. A huge kitchen, open 24 hours, is ready to serve patrons with Continental and Indian along with Pasta, Pizzas and great cocktails. The name waterside is given because of the view of the swimming pool from the cafe.
The service is prompt here, with waiters quietly doing there chores. The menu comprises of tandoor items as well, but is open at designated hours during the day, i.e. for lunch and dinner. The compact menu leads to fast service. A soothing music is heard in between a clamorous kitchen. The walls of the kitchen have been given an aesthetic look and natural light is gleaming on the tables.
Coming to the food items, we had ordered Veg. Fried Rice. The rice was perfectly cooked, with large onion rings added to the vegetables. It gave away a different taste, the onions that is. Overall, it was a bit dry, and should be had with some accompaniments.
Next up was the Penne Pasta. It was penne pasta served in tomato sauce along with zucchini and other veggies. We had asked for a mixed sauce pasta, but the sauce inclined more towards the tomato one. It was flooded with cream and pepper, the latter making it too spicy.
To cool down the extra spicy pasta, we ordered the Ginger Rock Salt Cooler, a classic cooler with ginger rock salt, soda, topped with cola. It was enticing and really soothing. It was prepared in the true sense of a cooler.
The major numbers go to the service and ambiance. Calm and quiet as it can get, apart from the clamor of the kitchen. The view is pretty relaxing. The food; not that good in numbers. They try to make it authentic, but adjusting to the authenticity at the behest of taste made the chefs overdo the thing. Cocktails and Mocktails are immaculate.
UPDATE: Covid protocols are followed here. The menu is now available by scanning a QR code. The food and service...
Read moreDisheartening to see the once favourite place fondly remembered for the memories it gave has been turned into a road side dhaba if not a shack!! went there for puja buffet at 3 pm slot, was astonished to see the place was overcrowded with hardly a few people to serve .The food had practically nothing! yes I mean it ,we had literally move around the counter for first 15minutes to detect a starter among the leftovers ,the set menu that they advertised was a myth!! the topshe fry never met our plate instead they insisted on serving some road side look alike fish chops!! the grill counter was more compromising, the chicken was hard and chewey ,the fish never came to your plate inspite of asking 4 times in a row.now coming to the main course ,the sorshe ilish is far from reality!! instead they had given deep fried paper thin pieces of hilsa, without any gravy such is the plight.what is more of a concern is the parshe in mustard sauce and veg fried rice were both stale and smelly!!! the mutton was bland and the final pin in the coffin is the biriyani ,should they have served any road side haji biriyani it would have been better!! and all this fuss at 2725!!! hyatt used to be foodies paradise specially the puja mahabhoj for its menu and taste it outshined other 5 star hotels of repute but sadly enough the management has been callous in maintaining the same .the reimagined water side cafe is nothing but a skeleton of...
Read moreStandard keeps falling at the Hyatt Waterside Cafe. I have been visiting here since last 10 years or more, I can see the change. Here are what I experienced today: Waiters work as if they are forced to work under lot of pressure. All grim faced, just doing their duty. Something wrong with their manager. A lady (most probably a manager) sat at one of the cafe desks and constantly called one waiter and another and kept scolding them loudly. At one point, I deliberately took a longer walk to the buffet avoiding that desk with loud manager and poor-faced waiters. In the end when we asked for the bill, there was a technical issue in their system and we had to wait for 30 mins, which was fine. After that I walked to the billing desk and told them that we are waiting for 30 minutes, we do not need the bill, just inform the amount, and I will pay as I must go now. The waiter replied : 'It is not 30 minutes'. I chose not to argue. He added 'it is a technical glitch and not my fault'. I was anyway not there to argue, so it didnt continue.
I must say.. I did not feel sad because the food was average but priced higher than other star hotels.. But because I could see the fall in the approach and behaviour. Hyatt has lost the warm, friendly vibe that it earlier had and gave an increasingly scary, unhappy, aggresive and not friendly vibe.
I would not want to go there with my family and kids at least for...
