When you are in Coimbatore, every meal you have in the city should be at Sree Annapoorna. I was introduced to Sree Annapoorna by my dad when I was a kid. His business in textiles would often bring him to the cotton city and I would travel with him. At that age, I was so fascinated by coffee that those flavors have still stayed with me.
Apparently every time I traveled with him, and if the train had to pass Coimbatore, I would wake up and ask him if I can have Annapoorna coffee. And full credit goes to the owners and staff for having maintained the quality for so many years.
So today’s lunch was at Sree Annapoorna and it was the South Indian meals. The meal is served with several side dishes-kootu, cauliflower poriyal, keerai, sambar, rasam, kurma, dal, kara kozhumbu, curds, payasam, chappati, rice, and appalam.
I have lived all my life in Chennai and South Indian meals at all the popular joints in Chennai, but nothing can beat the meals at Annapoorna.
Every side dish on the plate was well balanced. The sweetness, tangy, and spice in the rasam was perfect. Kara kozhumbu was the highlight, well balanced spice and sour flavors. Most hotels in the south can’t get the chapatti right, but Annapoorna had it right, soft and warm.
Cauliflower poriyal was perfectly cooked and for the added crunch, there was crushed peanuts. This poriyal reminded me of the sabzi my mom made with cauliflower. Perfectly chopped and cooked.
To finish off the meal, I had the butter milk and it was a great finish to the meal.
Evening snack was again at Annapoorna. This time it was sambar vadai and dosai. Perfectly flavored sambar with a crisp vadai served with coconut chutney.
They have the best staff in the service industry. Well trained, soft spoken and service oriented. During my great visit, I finished by meal and asked for some water, the service executive apologized for having forgotten to give me a glass of water and said, “I never forget to keep water. I should have kept a glass of water even before you ordered your meal. I’m really very sorry.”
And no visit to Coimbatore and Annapoorna is complete without the Annapoorna coffee. It’s not coffee, it’s memories served in dabara. Brings back the memories of my first sip of Annapoorna coffee with my dad and about every trip through Coimbatore where I would wake him up and ask for Annapoorna coffee.
It’s this connection that people have with Annapoorna that has made this brand so popular with very little marketing. When food takes you back in time, there is no need...
Read moreAs all we know, the Name of Annapoorna is best in class in it's food, but I request the management to take care of your employees. They have been exploited alot. Tbh, a server who served our table, cried to us saying, "I couldn't serve you my best, it's like we are working very hard but for nothing, that's why I didn't wanted to take order, but since I'm 15 years serving, it is feeling guilty, that's why I'm little arrogant to take orders since management is not treating us as a human."
This conversation happened after we asked "why aren't you taking our order not even listening, you have been running since".
I totally understand their pain and sufferring as the server clearly mentioned that they have been working for 10:30 hours and no time to sit . Since my family is open minded and can understand people, but you can clearly see the smirks and etch of the customers clearly.
Also I have to mention, the platings and the and the servings IS NOT GOOD AND NOT UPTO THE MARK. the RATE IS DEFINITELY NOT GOOD with the type of SERVING AND THE FOOD DECOR. For that, you better go to a nice road side hotel. The servings and also the food with love will be served.

The restaurant also serves awesome North indian food but pre-dominantly known for its south Indian food. Awesome food and awesome taste the best place to have. My dad is so made about this place that if he come to Coimbatore he surely eats once at this place. It has 7-8 outlets in Coimbatore and R.S. Puaram wala is the best. Their sitting capacity is really very huge in each Restaurant (appr. 150 people can sit and each together at a time) and very quick service and very competitive rates and best quality of food and decent ambience and polite staffs and caring managers. Not a vegetarian normally I could start to think about it when there would be more restaurants like this one. And on top of it the location is also nice. Absolutely recommended. One of the most sorted out restaurant in the CBD of Coimbatore surrounded by hospitals, theater and court. Annapoorna never fails the expectation of the people.
