In the heart of Usmanpura lies a culinary gem cherished by locals – Oshwal Fafda & Jalebi. This unassuming canteen, with its shared tables and Gujarati-only menu, is a testament to its authenticity and dedication to serving the community. It's a place where time seems to stand still, offering a glimpse into the heart of traditional Gujarati dining.
Ambiance:
Stepping into Oshwal Fafda & Jalebi is like stepping back in time. The simple, no-frills setting, with its shared tables and bustling atmosphere, creates a sense of shared experience and community dining. The lack of pretense allows the focus to remain on the food, which is clearly the star of the show.
The Gujarati-only menu is another indicator of the establishment's commitment to its local roots. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in the language and culture, even if you're not a native speaker. The friendly staff is always ready to assist and make recommendations, ensuring a welcoming experience for all.
Food:
The fafda-jalebi combo is the undisputed champion of the menu. Fafda, a crispy, savory snack made from chickpea flour, is a staple of Gujarati cuisine. Oshwal's version is light, airy, and perfectly seasoned, with a subtle hint of spice. The accompanying jalebi, a deep-fried sweet made from fermented batter, is a delightful contrast. It's golden brown, crispy on the outside, and syrupy on the inside, with a balanced sweetness that's not overpowering.
The combination of these two seemingly disparate dishes is a testament to the ingenuity of Gujarati cuisine. The contrasting textures and flavors create a harmonious balance that's both satisfying and unique. It's a culinary experience that's not to be missed.
Overall:
Oshwal Fafda & Jalebi is more than just a place to eat; it's a cultural institution. It's a place where generations have gathered to share meals, conversations, and laughter. It's a place where the flavors of Gujarat come alive, transporting you to a simpler time.
Whether you're a local seeking a taste of home or a visitor looking to experience authentic Gujarati cuisine, Oshwal Fafda & Jalebi is a must-visit. It's a reminder that the best culinary experiences are often found in the most unassuming places. So, the next time you're in Usmanpura, make sure to stop by and savor the magic of this local gem. Read moreOshwal Restaurant, established in 1972, is a renowned culinary destination in Ahmedabad, India, celebrated for its authentic Gujarati delicacies, particularly the iconic fafda-jalebi combination.
Fafda, a crispy gram flour snack, paired with jalebi, a sweet, spiral-shaped treat, is a traditional breakfast favorite in Gujarat, especially during festivals like Dussehra.
Oshwal's dedication to quality and flavor has earned it a loyal customer base. The restaurant operates multiple outlets in Ahmedabad, including locations on Ashram Road and SG Highway, providing patrons with a comfortable dining experience.
In addition to fafda-jalebi, Oshwal's menu features a variety of Gujarati specialties such as undhiyu and kachori, as well as an assortment of desserts. Read moreTL;DR Version : No frills classic and still delivering on its promise is what makes Oshwal my new favorite for breakfast in the city. The Fafda Jalebi is a must try!
Food: The Fafda Jalebi is a must must try. Crunchy fafda which was neither too thick nor too thin and had the right flavor profile (no excess soda!!), probably the best I've had in a long long time. The Kadhi is great whereas the Raw Papaya Bhuji is ok and I've had better but when you have the 3 in combination, it's delectable. We also had the Methi Gota and I loved it, nice and crispy on the outside and soft & fluffy from the inside. Best enjoyed piping hot with their Masala Tea!
Service: Quick efficient and no nonsense. We had to wait for just around 10-15mins on a Sunday morning of a long weekend so their turnaround time is pretty good.
Ambience: As with most old school eateries, Oshwal is a simple restaurant which serves food on steel table in steel plates and cutlery. You may end up sharing the table also but this is exactly what gives it the feel of yesteryears. And when the food is this good, you can continue like this for decades so that you don't...
