Review: Toran Dining Hall, Ahmedabad
Overview: Toran Dining Hall is a renowned vegetarian dining establishment in Ahmedabad, celebrated for its authentic Gujarati cuisine and warm, inviting atmosphere. The hall is well-known among locals and tourists alike, providing a unique cultural dining experience.
Ambiance: The interior of Toran Dining Hall exudes a traditional Gujarati charm, featuring vibrant decor that includes colorful wall paintings and wooden furnishings. The spacious layout accommodates both small and large groups, making it suitable for families, friends, and gatherings. The atmosphere is lively yet comfortable, allowing diners to enjoy their meals without feeling rushed.
Cuisine: Toran specializes in traditional Gujarati thalis, which are known for their variety and flavor. The thali typically includes:
Rotli (Chapati): Freshly made, soft chapatis that complement the meal.
Sabzi: Seasonal vegetables cooked in various styles, showcasing authentic spices.
Dal: A hearty lentil dish, often served with a side of ghee for added richness.
Rice: Plain or flavored rice options, providing a comforting base for the meal.
Kadhi: A yogurt-based curry that adds a tangy flavor to the thali.
Pickles and Chutneys: Homemade pickles and tangy chutneys enhance the meal with additional flavors.
Desserts: Sweet treats like shrikhand or gulab jamun to conclude the dining experience.
Quality of Food: The food at Toran is consistently praised for its freshness and authentic taste. Ingredients are sourced locally, ensuring high quality and vibrant flavors. Each dish reflects the traditional cooking methods that Gujarati cuisine is known for, making it a favorite for both locals and visitors.
Service: The service at Toran Dining Hall was once good but off late it has become very poor. The staff are low morale, dirtly dressed, crude like a Dhabha, inattentive (you need to keep asking for items), they don't wait to hear your answer & serve you anyways & they look so disgusted and unwelcoming. The management needs to address this issue else the joint will eventually fail.
Pricing: Toran Dining Hall offers excellent value for money. The pricing is reasonable for the quality and quantity of food provided. The thali system allows diners to sample a wide variety of dishes at an affordable price, making it a budget-friendly option for families and groups. About 1000 plus for three thalis.
Visitor Experience: Many patrons leave Toran with a sense of satisfaction, not just from the meal but also from the overall experience. The combination of delicious food, attentive service, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a popular choice for both casual diners and those looking to celebrate special occasions.
Tips for Visitors:
Timing: Visit during off-peak hours to avoid long waits, especially on weekends.
Thali: Opt for the Gujarati thali to experience the full range of flavors and dishes.
Group Dining: It’s an excellent place for group meals, so consider going with family or friends to share the experience.
Conclusion: Toran Dining Hall is a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic Gujarati cuisine in Ahmedabad. With its rich flavors, welcoming ambiance, and excellent service, it provides a memorable dining experience that captures the essence of Gujarati hospitality. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning guest, a meal at Toran is sure to delight.

The restaurant has a great ambiance, which immediately made us feel comfortable. They serve only thali meals during lunchtime, and the variety of dishes is incredible. From puris, chapatis, and doklas to several curries, sweets, and other items, the spread seemed endless! The staff kept serving more as soon as we finished something, allowing us to eat as much as we wanted. Many of the curries had a slightly sweet taste, which is typical of Gujarati cuisine.
The meal ended with basmati rice, making it a completely satisfying experience. The quality of every dish was excellent, and the service was prompt and friendly. For anyone who loves authentic Gujarati food and enjoys a high-class vegetarian meal, I highly recommend Toran Restaurant.
