The Commoner’s Kitchen — Restaurant in Gujarat

This Cafe is tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood off Ghod Dod road. The entrance is unassuming but the watchman of a more prominent establishment opposite the Commoner's Kitchen is happy to show the little entrance to the Cafe.

Atmosphere

The Cafe is very neatly designed with good interior finish and subtle lighting. There are tables for two, four and more. It is good for couples as well. Cozy, dim and posh.

Service

When we entered, there was no table for two available. They seated us at the bar but were kind enough to relocate us to a table which was vacated shortly after.

We ordered two burgers which came with sides. However, the waiter never asked us which side we preferred and ultimately the burger came with chips instead of fries. We ordered fries separately. Also, upon being served, the waiter had to be reminded to serve us coke.

Food

To be honest, I have eaten better food at less than quarter of the price they charge at the Commoner's Kitchen.

The chips that came with the burger were not crispy at all.

The bun fell apart after the first bite.

The burger was adequately filled and we could eat comfortably. However, the taste was not exceptional and coupled with the stale buns, it was a bad choice to order.

The 4 stars are for the burgers. I have had burgers at many places - Bombay Brassierie ( Mumbai) Good flipping burgers, Burger king etc etc...but the burgers here were at another level. Especially SMOKED CHIC ( smoked chicken which was quite juicy with their inhouse buns & sauces, some tomatoes & romaine lettuce) - mind blowing - quite costly @470 Rs, for a city like Surat but quite exclusive also. The other burger was mushroom patty burger - shitake + normal mushrooms & rest of the ingredients remain the same as the chicken burger, was also good. Coffee was NOT good. They have coffee beans over which they have exclusive rights, so it seems ( according to their management) nobody can buy those beans..but taste wise they were quite average. One star reduced only because of that. The desserts are made by the wife of the owner - we tried sponge cake with berry orange flavour & white chocolate glaze. To be honest it was just about ok. Nothing special there. But the staff is quite good & the ambience is nice. Go & devour...
