The oldest café in Shimla, the Indian Coffee House hasn’t changed a bit in the four plus decades that it has been part of Shimla's cafe scene. Always crowded, despite the many interesting options in the Mall Road area, Indian Coffee House retains its old world charm and a visit is sure to bring in nostalgia of times past. Whatever the food, a hot cup of steaming filter coffee is a must-have. The south-Indian snacks especially the Masala Dosa and the Sambhar Idli are delicious in Shimla's cool climate. A unique innovation of the place is its Mutton Dosa with a mix of minced mutton and onion masala stuffing, which tastes good with or without a serving of sambhar. The Indian Coffee House is an ideal place for a good chat over coffee, or to just hang out after a stroll around the Mall, Shimla. It's a great stop for light evening snacks too. A mildly spicy vegetable cutlet or a mutton cutlet can be enjoyed with a cup of coffee or chai or maybe just a simple French toast with an omelet or crunchy fried finger chips. BEST FOR Filter Coffee, Mutton Dosa, Masala Dosa ALSO SERVES Mutton/Vegetable Cutlet, Idli Sambar, Sambhar Vada Seating: Available Timing: 9 AM - 9 PM ADDRESS DC Office Road, The Mall, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh 171001

I would be happy to provide a food and restaurant review of the famous Indian Coffee House, a South Indian restaurant located in Shimla. My experience at the Indian Coffee House was delightful, and the food was absolutely delicious. The restaurant is situated on Mall Road, which is a popular location in Shimla. The ambiance of the restaurant is quite simple, with basic wooden furniture and a casual atmosphere. I had the pleasure of trying the Mutton Dosa and the Mutton Cutlet, which were both outstanding. The Mutton Dosa was crispy and filled with a generous amount of succulent, tender mutton. The Mutton Cutlet was equally delicious, with a crispy coating and a perfectly spiced mutton filling. Both dishes were served with a variety of chutneys, which were flavorful and complemented the dishes well. But what really stole the show was their famous coffee. The coffee was rich and flavorful, with just the right amount of sweetness. I could easily see why it is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. The Indian Coffee House is a century old chain of restaurants run by The Coffee Board. It attracts a loyal clientele for its good-value coffees and South Indian snacks. Their outlet in Shimla is in a prime location, just below the Ridge, Shimla's prime tourist drag. That's the best thing about it. The old world ambience has long faded. The service is brisk and doesn't encourage you to linger. Customer turnover must be a key matrix. I like cafés with a view, so I chose a small sitout, with natural light and away from the din. It's a sitout with tremendous potential to create a dining space with a view. But customer delight is something the food-focussed gerontocrats at The Coffee Board haven't thought for a long time. The vada-idli sambhar chutney I ordered was a mess when it arrived. The sambhar was splattered all over the bowl and the idli-vada was cold and hard (this in late winter!), the sambhar likewise was cold and while spicy, the ingredients were difficult to guess. The good-value dosa was luckily warm, if not sizzling hot, and authentically South Indian. The filter coffee was a total disaster, just a thin milky concoction. The coffee taste was entirely absent, just the ghost of it lingered. For this disappointing breakfast the bill was a bit excessive. I expressed my disappointment at the billing counter, and you can be sure I wouldn't return, even with a gun pointed at me!

Went this ICH location @ Shimla few days back. This seems to be one of their oldest establishments. Seating Options: They have 2 floors which can easily accommodate 150+ people at a time Service: The place was filled with people as every other ICH branch. With the number of people they had to serve, they had excellent service time. Even for heavy orders they were back with the orders in 7-8 mins. Staff: The staff was courteous; they were a bit old though :) Ambience: Pretty rustic and can be better. I have been to many other better ICH locations around the country. Price: Pricing is good as usual. Good on pocket. Food: Can be rated between average to good. The coffee is too light here, hence ask for strong coffee upfront, if you are coffee lover. Overall, you can have a good economical meal here.

An archaic building resting in the midst of a hustling Mall Road, Shimla. You might pass by without even noticing it. And that's the beauty. It is unnoticeable unless you are looking for it. But you enter the place, and it holds you with its age old charm. You come across hospitable and polite staff and waiters who are quick to make a conversation with you. Bread-butter, toast, and delicious cutlets - you can't really have one. We also ordered mixed pakodas and we thought we never ever had pakodas in our lives. And need I say coffee? In the middle of all things urban and suave, lies a legacy crumbling. The building needs a renovation for sure but I request more and more travelers to visit Indian Coffee House so that they are urged to renovate ot sooner than later.

One of the oldest place in Shima. It is located on the mall road. This place was started during the British rule I believe and sti carries forward the same culture and traditions. It seems that the place hasn't been renovated since the day it was started with the complete interiors, ambience, table, chairs and even the menu display board seems to be atleast 30- 40 year old. The waiters also follow the old British traditions with multiple level and designations of them that you can identify with the different colored bands and caps that they wear. The food quality is fine but the tastes are not upto the mark as compared to the current new places that you will find at mall road. A must visit place of you want to indulge in the old British era charm.
