Kalyan Restaurant & Bar — Restaurant in Jaipur Municipal Corporation

We were heavily pressured to write a review, so here is our honest review of our meal and experience.

We were moved from our table on the first terrace to another terrace with a bar and encouraged to sit here. The tables were slightly nicer but this was it. We were confused why this was the case as he explained the menu and drinks were exactly the same. We asked twice if the prices were the same, which he nodded once and then said quietly ‘a little more expensive here’. We then left to go back downstairs. A completely inappropriate thing to do, and it become obvious to us they wanted us to spend more money on the SAME food.

Hugely rushed to order. They came over three times in the space of 5 minutes to take our order when we were still looking for the menu, which made us feel pressured and uncomfortable.

The food however, was good. We had a paneer starter, a chicken curry, biriyani and naan which all tasted good. No complaints on this part.

Once we had finished our food and as soon as my partner left for the washroom, the waiter came up to me and explained that I ‘need to write a review’. I replied kindly by saying that this is ‘no problem, we will make sure to write one when we are home.’ He proceeded to sternly/ say that they need it now and that I need to promise him I will write it as he doesn’t want me falling asleep. This whole conversation was very uncomfortable. I have a feeling a lot of the reviews without description on google have experienced the same.

Finally, and in my opinion the most upsetting, is when the same waiter came over to us as we were leaving to ask us about the riots happening in the UK (where we live). Although this in itself is a saddening but understandable topic to want to discuss, he then quickly went on to talk about how the Muslims have played a part and that they ‘are a huge issue around the world’. He proceeded to try and tell us to never get in a TukTuk in India with a Muslim, before I interrupted him to say that we were not comfortable with this conversation at all and were unable to agree with these views. Again, a shockingly inappropriate thing to say to us, baring in mind strangers to him.

So, in conclusion, the food was good but this was it. We were made to feel uncomfortable, offended, and untrustworthy that the restaurant wasn’t trying to ‘rip us off’. It was Saturday when we were coming from our long tiring day in search of a good place to have our dinner, we found this place as it was rated higher around the area.

When we reached the place, we were offered a large menu with multiple options to choose from but try to get an update from the staff, as many things are unavailable.

We sat there waiting 20 minutes for our two drinks, lemon tea and mint mojito and that is the moment I knew that I have made a terrible mistake of choosing this place to eat.

Mint Mojito was just your regular Mountain Dew or Sprite with a dash of green color and few mint leaves, it was extremely disappointing and too sweet.

We ordered Pomodorro Pasta which had Spinach Sauce as per their menu (irony) and their Special Kalyan Pizza. Pasta was average while the Pizza was horrible. It was under cooked with near raw veggies and a weird taste of paneer probably because it was baked in a hurry. It was such that we could not even finish it

Our highlight was Lemon tea, I mean what could have gone wrong with hot water and lemon slices, right!

At the end, the staff asked, how was the food and I conveyed my honest feedback in the most polite way possible. He was quite shocked to hear that. I am not sure how.

I would say, go there and choose things wisely and order things which can't go wrong, like our lemon tea and you shall have some above average experience.
