Review of Udupi Restaurant – Horrible Service, Stale Food & Chef’s Misbehavior
If you’re looking for a good dining experience, Udupi is the last place you should visit. Our experience here was filled with poor service, mismanagement, stale food, and even misbehavior from the chef.
We arrived before 12 p.m. and placed an order for a dosa, two idli vada, two masala teas, and two filter coffees. The order-taking process itself was frustrating—the server kept walking away to other tables instead of focusing on ours, delaying a simple task. After waiting 15-20 minutes, we received only one filter coffee. Then, after 25 minutes, the server casually informed us that dosa was unavailable—even while we saw another table being served dosa at the same moment. This happened only because he forgot to inform the kitchen about our order on time, making us suffer for his mistake.
Now, here’s where the mismanagement got even worse. The menu clearly states that South Indian food is served only until 12 p.m., and after 12 p.m., North Indian and other cuisines are available. First, they denied us dosa, and when we chose to order something else, they suddenly said that the chef for North Indian food hadn’t even arrived at the restaurant!
Frustrated, I went to the reception to check if the chef could prepare non-spicy food before confirming my order. The server had previously told me multiple times that the food would be spicy, so I inquired about two items but planned to order only one once they confirmed whether it could be made non-spicy. Instead of checking with the chef and letting me decide, the receptionist blindly said, “Yes, it will be done,” and within 5-10 minutes, both dishes—chilli paneer and biryani—arrived at our table, even though I had only planned to order one.
Since we had no other option, I chose to eat the biryani. That’s when things got disgusting. While eating, I noticed that fresh lachha onions were mixed with stale ones. After a few bites, I got a mouthful of something rotten, and my stomach immediately started aching. I stopped eating and showed the server, who saw the stale onions but had no explanation. We left the food untouched.
Now, the worst part—blatant misbehavior. When we went to the counter for billing, the chef himself came out and started yelling at us instead of acknowledging the issue. He refused to take responsibility, arguing that he could only deduct ₹60 for the spoiled food. But this wasn’t about money—it was about health. Serving stale food is a serious issue, but instead of handling the matter professionally, he continued to argue and misbehave.
Then came the most shocking part. The chef openly threatened us, saying: “Even if you want to review or complain, we will see to it.”
This level of arrogance and unprofessionalism is unacceptable.
With this experience, we left the restaurant feeling disgusted and shocked. I strongly urge others to avoid this place. The name Udupi might remind you of well-known, high-quality South Indian restaurants, but do not mistake this one for the same. The food, service, and management here are an absolute disgrace. There are far better restaurants in the city—choose wisely.
