Read moreChef Pillai restaurant in Kochi has been creating quite a buzz, and my recent dining experience compelled me to share my thoughts. The anticipation was high as I delved into their menu, eager to taste what the hype was all about.
The culinary journey began with the much-lauded fish nirvana. The flavors were commendable, a delicate dance of spices that enhanced the freshness of the fish. However, the excitement began to wane with the kandhaari chicken. While it had a distinct flavor profile, it lacked the depth and succulence one would expect from a dish of this caliber.
The nool parotta, a South Indian staple, was decent. The mutta appam, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise. The egg coating added a richness that complemented the appam's soft center, creating a satisfying blend of textures.
As I explored the beverage options, I opted for a seemingly refreshing watermelon juice. Unfortunately, this choice proved to be a letdown. The juice tasted off, and it was evident that the fruit used was not at its freshest. A disappointing start to the meal, as freshness should be a non-negotiable standard, especially for a place of such repute. Also the sweet lime was too sweet to drink.
The ambiance of Chef Pillai's restaurant seemed to be ok. The décor exudes a contemporary yet warm vibe, and the attention to detail in the interior design is evident. However, the same cannot be said for the service. There is a positive sign in service.
Reflecting on the overall experience, it becomes apparent that Chef Pillai's restaurant did not quite live up to the expectations set by its reputation. The dishes, though skillfully prepared, lacked the wow factor that distinguishes an exceptional dining establishment. The inconsistency across the menu, coupled with the disappointment of the watermelon juice, contributed to a sense of unfulfillment.
It's crucial to acknowledge that expectations can significantly influence one's perception of a dining experience. The preconceived notions built around Chef Pillai's restaurant might have played a role in my assessment. However, as a diner, one hopes for an experience that transcends expectations and leaves an indelible mark.
In conclusion, my visit to Chef Pillai's restaurant in Kochi resulted in a mixed bag of impressions. While some dishes showcased culinary finesse, others left room for improvement. The freshness of ingredients, particularly in the case of the watermelon juice, was a notable concern. People from my group fell sick and did vomit.
There is potential for growth and refinement, and I hope that future visits will witness an elevation in the overall dining experience that aligns more closely with the accolades associated with Chef...

We ordered their Mini Taste Menu Pack(if I'm not mistaken about the name), priced at ₹1600 + tax/person, totaling approximately ₹1888 per person. Since we were a group of four, we ordered four (also, they mentioned that if we ordered four of this menu pack, we'd get a free bread refill). The food was just AVERAGE.
Starting with the appetizers, the INJIPULI CHICKEN LEGS, tasted very similar to Honey Glazed Chicken. Next came, named with SAMBARAM and KADUMANGA PANIPURI, which consisted of 8 golgappas with mango pickle inside and a small bottle of sambaram. It tasted okay, but I don't think it's worth the money. The third appetizer was something called PAZHAMPORI CHAT, which was basically one Pazhampori cut into small pieces and topped with regular mixture and chat masala. The fourth appetizer was KAPPA FRY (again, not sure of the name), which consisted of Kappa Puzhukku shaped into small oval balls, fried with some coating on top, and served with chutney. This one was good but still not worth the money they charge for it. The fifth one was MASALA GRILLED TIGER PRAWNS, which was better than the other appetizers, with 6 or 7 pieces. The welcome drink, a mix of pineapple and passion fruit, was good.
Then came the CHICKEN roast (not sure about the name), which tasted like an average chicken roast with too many shallots (cheriya ulli) and gravy barely had 3 pieces. Next was the MUTTON Roast (the name might be different), again an average dish with three pieces of mutton, where two of them were mostly bone, and some gravy. The FISH NIRVANA was the tastiest among all; we loved it, especially with the ghee rice included in this. Had 2 portions of Nirvana. Among the breads and rice, the APPAM, NOOL POROTTA, and GHEE RICE were very good. There were also some vegetarian options like POTATO CURRY and ULLI THEEYAL with a decent amount of Kerala Red Rice. The vegetarian options tasted below average.
For dessert, there was a BROWNIE, which was not good, and a CHEESECAKE that tasted more like ada payasam than a cheesecake. Finally, we had a SULAIMANI. And that was it!
The bill came to approximately ₹7500/-. NOT WORTH A...
