I’ve been eating at Komala Vilas / Banana Leaf on Rashbehari Avenue since my childhood — their dosas, vadas, and chutneys have been an inseparable part of my growing-up years. Along with the Prema Vilas (closed for many years in between), this place shaped my taste for authentic South Indian food in Kolkata.
That’s why it pains me to write this. Over the last few months, the food quality — especially in delivery orders — has gone down drastically. Out of my last 5 orders (via Swiggy/Zomato), 3 had serious freshness issues — smelly vada, stale or sour coconut chutney, and most recently, masala dosa filling that had a pungent, off smell. While dining in, I’ve never encountered such severe problems, so this is a recent and worrying change.
I even called the restaurant out of concern, not anger — but the response I received was dismissive at first (“it must be from a different Banana Leaf”) and later on providing order details, they were indifferent (“there is no issue here — we don't want to argue but what can we do?”).
Banana leaf at Komala Vilas was never just another restaurant — it was a piece of South Kolkata’s culinary identity, known for its consistency, simplicity, and honesty in food. I sincerely hope the owners, or whoever manages it now, read this and look into what’s happening — whether quality control has slipped, whether the ownership or kitchen team has changed, or if delivery orders are being handled carelessly.
Please bring back the standard that made so many of us loyal for decades. This place deserves better — and so do its...
Read moreIf I could have a negative star, I would have given it. The following things happened with us when we went today for dining.
They mixed our orders while serving even after asking. I ordered a cheese onion rava dosa and my mother ordered without cheese one. The server mixed it even after asking if my one had cheese.
We kept waiting and waiting for a single item in our order but they forgot. They wanted to clear table and expected us to leave. After reminder they brought the item and it was soggy and cold. We denied eating it and didn't pay for it.
There's no finger bowl system, they have basin but no water in tap. Using bucket and a packaging container to wash my hand felt gross and unhygienic.
Food didn't have salt, the taste was so so. Being a south Indian I felt utter disappointment having such food.
In the service industry it's not expected to have so many issues. I understand you have days when there's rush things happen, but it matters how you handle it. No one bothered to apologize to us.
We paid around 2k for a meal that was not satisfactory and all this messed up our mood.
I won't dinein here again and would not...
Read moreThis review is of Bana Leaf @ Komala Vilas restaurant located at 18 Upohar Town Centre. Delivery: Their food delivery ordered via Swiggy at 8.30 am was delivered at 9.37 am against promised 35 minutes delivery. The cooking took one hour and delivery 7 minutes. In these 70 minutes better food and better packaged food could have come to us from Lake area 9 km away near Golpark. Food and it's quality: Ordered 3 plates of Idlis and 2 Masala Dosas. Idlis were odd shaped, torn off in an unprofessional manner. Taste of Idli and the liquid chutney was acceptable. The Dosas were horrible. Cold rumpled up Dosas packed in long empty packaging. The Masala sent along with the Dosas was darkish looking totally mashed and messed up and not tasty at all. It was bad. The extreme delay and the bad taste of Dosas was too much. The packaging of Rs 50 is not at all justifiable for this poor quality of food. Rating: Standard of the restaurant has declined over time and it is on a downswing. Not satisfied with such declining standards. So rating of this food cannot be more than 2/5. We will try to avoid ordering from...
