I was informed that their sweets are of the greatest quality and taste, and they have a rich history as a sweet shop. So I decided to order sweets for tatta (তত্ত্ব - gift exchanged during a Bengali wedding) from this sweet shop on 20th Jan, to take delivery on 24th Jan. Immediately on entering the shop, it has a terrible old and dirty vibe. There were men in their white vests and barefoot, making sweets with their bare hands (no gloves) on the floor. We chose to overlook this given their reputation. We asked for their portfolio of tatta sweet trays to choose, but they barely paid any attention. When we had queries regarding their tray decorations, we were given curt replies, particularly from Mr Pradeep, who seemed to be the main person running this shop. Mr Pradeep has absolutely no interest in our requirements, and asked us to just order from the portfolio or just not. We again chose to overlook this attitude given their reputation and placed the order, which also included an additional cost of packing/decorating the tatta trays.
On delivery of the trays on the 24th, once we were en route to deliver the tatta, we realised that one of the trays had a massive leak, even at the slightest tilt. They were packed quite terribly and looked like a job done by someone who was in a hurry or didn't know how to do it or didn't want to do it. The sugar syrup leaked all over our clothes and car. We had to deliver a sticky and a leaking tray of sweets to the groom's family, a matter of great shame for us.
I visited the shop today to inform them of their shortcomings and give them a piece of my mind. Being dismissive and rude towards customers, particularly Mr Pradeep, is borderline acceptable only if you can deliver the best service/product that you promise. Otherwise this attitude only harms the reputation of the store. I did not hear a single word of apology from Mr Pradeep, even after I mentioned that it is the least he could do. I would heavily recommend that you do not consider this shop for sweets for any important occasions, particularly for tatta, because they are, in my opinion, unprofessional in behaviour as well as...
Read moreGirish Chandra Dey and Sons stands as a timeless gem among Kolkata’s legendary sweet shops. Rooted in tradition, this establishment has thrived for generations, dating back to an era when advertising was virtually non-existent. Even today, it eschews modern marketing strategies, relying solely on the trusted power of word-of-mouth recommendations—a testament to its unparalleled quality.
This shop offers an array of sweets that are nothing short of extraordinary. During my last visit, I packed some Korapak and Norompak Sandesh for my colleagues in Delhi. The reaction? Absolute amazement! So much so that many of them expressed a desire to visit Kolkata just to experience these heavenly sweets firsthand.
Personally, I am a devoted fan of their signature Roso Malai, which is a masterpiece of flavor and texture. The quality of milk used is exceptional, leaving an indelible impression that lingers long after the last bite.
Despite its legendary status, Girish Chandra Dey and Sons faces tough competition in Kolkata’s bustling sweets and savories market. Yet, their unwavering commitment to quality and authenticity sets them apart.
To all sweet enthusiasts reading this, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to this iconic shop. Indulge in their exquisite delicacies, and don’t forget to spread the word to your friends and family far and wide. Let’s keep the legacy of this remarkable...
Read moreSweets/sandesh are very good but the salesman are cheaters. Today I bought sweet from this place at around 12 in the morning of Rs.320/- of different varieties. The salesman took Rs. 350/- from me. Talking 30 rupees extra for two pieces of sweets though not given. Though I doubted but he didn't allow me to check then. It was may be my fault somehow since I haven't checked then and there as I relied him at that moment and relied on the goodwill of the shop. Felt very bad and request the shop owner to look into the matter since it's for your reputation,...
