I recently visited Kafulok Restaurant in Tangra with family, and it turned out to be a delightful experience for authentic Chinese cuisine lovers.
🍴 Food
The food was the true highlight of our evening. Some dishes stood out brilliantly: • Roasted Chicken – Juicy, well-seasoned, and perfectly slow cooked with a rich flavor. • Garlic Steamed Fish – Fresh, tender, and infused with delicate garlic notes. Definitely one of the best dishes of the night. • Lemon Chicken – Crispy on the outside, soft inside, with a balanced tangy-sweet sauce. • Kafulok Fried Fish in Hot Red Chilli Sauce – Absolutely fabulous! The fish was crispy yet succulent, and the sauce added a fiery punch. • Fried Prawns – Golden, crunchy, and delicious – a great starter with red hot chilly sauce. • Mixed Kafulok Soup – Warm and comforting with a good mix of flavors, (you may or may not like the smell of pork - I like it) • Mixed Fried Rice – Fragrant, flavorful, and nicely balanced with veg, chicken, prawns, and egg. • Mixed Cantonese Noodles – Average compared to other dishes but still decent, ( missing sunny side toppings) • Prawns Manchurian – Tasty, though slightly on the saltier side (Dark Soya Sauce already contains salt)
Overall, the food was authentic, flavorful, and satisfying, value for money, making it well worth the visit.
🛎️ Service
The only drawback was the service flow. The staff served dishes in a random sequence – soup, starters, and mains arrived out of order, which disrupted the dining experience slightly. While the staff was polite, they need to follow a more structured serving sequence to improve the overall experience.
🌟 Ambience
The restaurant has a simple, family-friendly atmosphere. It may not be very modern in décor, but it maintains the old-world charm of Tangra’s Chinese eateries.
✅ Overall Impression
If you are looking for authentic Chinese food in Kolkata, Kafulok is a must-visit. The quality of food far outweighs the service gaps, and dishes like Garlic Steamed Fish, Roasted Chicken, and Fried Fish in Hot Red Chilli Sauce are enough reasons to return.
Recommended for families, groups, and anyone who enjoys genuine Tangra-style...
Read moreI can recall very few instances when I felt happy and sad at the same time. This exotic evening at China town was one such... When I called Kafulok this evening to enquire about availability, I was greeted with a gentlemanly voice and was assured that they take orders untill 10:30pm. So we booked a cab and headed to China town. But here's the catch! It was not like the colourful nights I recall, rather the deserted streets and allies were giving eerie feelings. But the moment we entered the restaurant it was gone!
Our host was a true gentleman and the best waiter I've come across recent times. Our dinner started with mix thai soup; the best in taste so far. Next were chilly garlic chicken and fried ginger prawns as starters. For the main course, there was mixed fried rice and egg Szechuan rice with Kung Pao Chicken (strongly recommended). It was accompanied by whiskey and mixed fruit juice as per our preferences.
Food was delectable, service was quick and the waiters were extremely vigilant; we hardly had to call them as everything was brought with utmost fastness and with most sophisticated manner.
I noticed the Vacantness in the vast eating area, the marks on the wall where AC's used to be, the empty shelves in the bar, yet I've to say they are like some Bengali feudal landlord family which is under immense economic pressure yet the elegance somehow lingered everywhere...And above all, I'll never forget their warm smiles, their Subtleness and the care with which they served... Our host, Mr William couldn't be any more helpful and dignified. 👍🏽
This place was nothing like it used to be and yet the service was impeccable and standard was religiously maintained. I salute their spirit and hope they overcome this phase soon enough. Therefore I earnestly request my readers to please support this heritage restaurant. You can definitely enjoy the ambience of ITC Royal Bengal which is just few miles from there, but THIS IS KOLKATA CHINA TOWN AND ONLY WE CAN SAVE THEIR LEGACY...
P. S. Pocket pinch for 3 was 2645/- only and they accept cards. Do pay...
Read moreBeen to Kafulok for the first time with an expectation that nearly touched the sky and was thrown down from there as soon as the food hit my tastebud.
Our #pawri got screwed and we ended up spending 6K on food that tasted below average!
Shedding some light below:
Their service was quite slow and we literally had to wait for everything starting from taking orders to serving it on our plates
The staff didn't even bother to ask if they need to food to be served
Bathroom wasn't clean at all and no hygiene maintained, which happens to be a priority especially when we know there's a virus roaming for free across the globe
Coming to Food
Starters
The presentation was quite nice and quantity ain't bad compared to the price they charged
I personally am a Pork lover and have tried it in many places all over the country but the Dry Chilli Pork served to us here had a lot of salt and it definitely didn't taste like Chilli Pork at all and when complained about it the attendant actually didn't give a flying fork rather smiled and left saying "I will let the chef know"
The fried Chicken wonton was nice and so was the Prawn chips
Main Course
We ordered Chilli Chicken and Fish that tasted bad to a level where we thought, it'd have been better if we ate in a roadside stall -_-
The Fried rice wasn't upto the mark at all and tasted quite bland
The Chilli Fish was too sweet to handle with a bunch of carrots in it, I felt I was having the dessert!
Sharing few pics but as you know they won't tell you how the food tasted hence try looking out for some other restaurant other than Kafulok in case you want to...
