My quest for exceptional Chinese cuisine in Kolkata's bustling Chinatown led me to Kim Ling, and what a discovery it was! The renovated interiors caught my eye, and the thought of their drool-worthy Chinese platters instantly elevated my anticipation. On a recent visit to Chinatown, we headed straight for this promising spot. Here’s a breakdown of what we savored from their menu:

Kim Ling Special Mixed Meifoon (5/5) Without a doubt, this was the best mixed meifoon we've ever tasted. As their signature dish, it featured a generous portion of succulent prawns, tender chicken, and fluffy egg, perfectly complemented by crisp veggies, sweet corn, and earthy mushrooms. The lustrous appearance and rich flavor of this dish clearly indicated the use of high-quality ingredients. This is truly how you prepare a lip-smacking meifoon!

Chilli Garlic Chicken Fried Rice (4/5) This chicken fried rice was exceptionally good, easily distinguishing itself from the stale and bland versions often found elsewhere. The vibrant flavor of chili and garlic was fully infused into the oil and sauces used in its preparation, creating a truly aromatic experience. The addition of finely chopped onions also added a delightful extra layer of texture.

Chilli Garlic Chicken (4/5) When a dish combines ample garlic and chilies, it's usually a winner, and this one was no exception. What sets Kim Ling apart is their technique: they ensure the chicken is coated and fried with egg and cornflour, resulting in a wonderfully crunchy and crisp exterior.

As a delightful bonus, Kim Ling also serves a complimentary green sauce that is simply too good to be missed. It pairs perfectly with any of their dishes, elevating the flavors even further. Kim Ling stands as one of the oldest and most reputable restaurants in Chinatown Tangra, proudly established by the renowned "boss lady," Monica Liu. Our experience here was truly memorable, confirming its status as a must-visit for anyone craving authentic and delicious...

Kim Ling is a well-known name in Chinatown, ranking just after Golden Joy and Big Boss. While slightly more affordable than its competitors, it still leans toward the pricier side, especially considering the basic ambiance. For reference, chicken dishes start at Rs. 500, and fish dishes begin at Rs. 800 for a full portion.

However, there’s an odd policy to note: if you're visiting with only male companions, you’ll be restricted to a separate dining area at back, which isn’t as comfortable or inviting as the main dining room.

During our visit, we ordered two simple dishes for lunch:

Chicken Cantonese Rice @ Rs.275 (3/5) Chilli Garlic Pepper Chicken @ Rs. 315 (2/5) The Cantonese Rice was mild, as expected, with a decent amount of chicken pieces but very few vegetables. The portion size was adequate for two people.

The Chilli Garlic Pepper Chicken had been fried in burnt oil, which gave it a blackened texture and an unpleasant, smoky flavor. The chicken pieces were incredibly small, almost like chicken chunks that didn’t even fill a spoon. Overall, the food was quite ordinary—nothing special at all.

Additionally, there's an uncomfortable trend. Some rich NRIs have come back to India and spread the US tipping culture here. As a result, the staff aggressively ask for tips, and even the guard outside asks for tips as well.

Being a moderately expensive restaurant, they don’t even accept small tips and instead insult customers, as mentioned in other reviews. This is such a shameful gesture toward customers. It's disappointing to see that tipping is expected just for delivering 2 food items from the counter to your table. It’s a shameful practice and one that left a sour taste in our experience.

Considering the mediocre food and the pressure to tip, I have no intention...
