Have been to this food outlet in Simmakal couple of times when I was in Madurai for some personal work. Had gone for lunch both of those times. So my overall experience would be based on the same.
Location - The restaurant is located in a somewhat densely populated area within the city. And it might not be so straight forward for someone new to be able to reach or identify it first time without some local guidance though maps can get you close to the place.
Parking and ambience - There is no any specific parking lot for the establishment and hence it's just street parking which is most of the times already occupied by visitors or vendors who are in that area for other shops. Two wheeler parking is manageable but car parking might not be so easy. The location of the restaurant is in such a place where there are lots of other shops and not so neatly maintained street/road so should not expect much in terms of cleanliness around this place. The restaurant is based on local traditions which means the shop is a bit localised and the ambience is as per the same. It's a bit cramped for space though they have both ground floor and upper floor. Since we were two, had used the ground floor seating area only.
The crowd visiting this food outlet is varied right from local people, some nearby office going people and some eager tourist who want to get a bit of local madurai cuisine. Overall, we can take our families to this place and we won't feel odd about it.
Food, service and cost It's a pure non-veg restaurant:) which means their menu is purely non-veg based with may be an occasional veg item to be able to allow one of the vegetarian in a group to be able to order something. Had biriyani and parotta and mutton sukka. Food was very tasty and good - both biriyani and parotta. Service, a bit much to expect here, considering the localisation except for prompt response. Cost wise was ok though the overall value for experience considering parking, service, ambience align with food points to Cost being on the higher end.
Overall, a good non-veg lovers' paradise. If you don't mind about parking, service and ambience and care only about hard core non veg food and also ready to splurge a bit, then you can definitely try this - you will not be disappointed. As far as am concerned, if am in and around that area, will for sure go for a meal here but will jti go to to extent to make my plans such that I have to go here...
Read moreI recently visited Konar Mess with high hopes of enjoying a delicious meal, but my experience turned out to be incredibly disappointing. I ordered two Kari dosas and kola urundai, and unfortunately, all the dishes had a very bad taste.
To begin with, the Kari dosas were the worst-tasting dosas I have ever had. The batter was poorly prepared, resulting in a bland and unappetizing flavor. The texture was also far from the crispy and flavorful dosas I was expecting.
In addition to the disappointing dosas, the kola urundai was equally unsatisfactory. The taste was off, and it seemed like the dish had been prepared with stale ingredients. The flavors were unbalanced and did not live up to the authentic taste that kola urundai should have.
The lack of basic amenities was another letdown at Konar Mess. Not having water bottles available for customers is simply unacceptable. It is essential to have access to drinking water during a meal, and the absence of this basic provision was highly inconvenient.
Furthermore, the overall hygiene standards at the restaurant were extremely poor. The dining area was unclean, with dirty tables and an unpleasant odor lingering in the air. Such conditions greatly affected my dining experience and left me feeling disgusted.
The service at Konar Mess was equally disheartening. The staff members displayed a lack of professionalism and seemed indifferent to customer needs. Their unresponsive and inattentive behavior only added to the disappointment of the overall experience.
In conclusion, I strongly discourage anyone from visiting Konar Mess based on my experience. The Kari dosas and kola urundai had a very bad taste, and the absence of water bottles, poor hygiene, and abysmal service further diminished the quality of the visit. There are undoubtedly better dining options in the area that prioritize taste, hygiene, and customer satisfaction. I recommend exploring other alternatives to avoid...
Read moreI am writing this review based on my visit with my family members of 10 on Sunday, July 30th visit, around 7 p.m. I am sharing my view now as I came with my kids to Chennai after several years for the summer vacation and recently returned to the USA. I understand this delay but I could not hold my nerve without writing it. :) I visited Madurai during my childhood, and we hardly know the places there. We visited this restaurant on our way back to Chennai from the Kodaikanal trip. Based on the review by some small screen stars (Madurai Muthu and a couple of other TV Hosts). I insisted my family members go to this restaurant as all the foods shown on the screen via YouTube were mouth-watering. When we visited this place, we first felt the ambiance, which could have been better as it was a little suffocating. We still went ahead because of the food review I saw earlier. 80% of our orders were unavailable then, including Briyani, an essential requirement for any Non-veg restaurant. Nothing was available like any Briyani, Crab, Kola Urundai, prawn-related items, and some sweets..etc. We had to order Parota, which comes with the regular Salna/Kurma, Idly, and Curry Dosai. Honestly, That's it, and again, none was available.
The mutton Chukka was okay, including the quantity for the Price we paid. We didn't like the place as there was no proper Air circulation, and we felt uncomfortable. The wait time was way high, including the cost of the Price. The servers didn't even understand a basic request in Tamil, except for one older adult, as he was the one looking after everyone that day evening, which was another frustration for him and us as well... It is not worth visiting this place except for the localities if they don't have any options,...
