The name is synonymous with Idli in the town of foodies that is Madurai. Murugan idli kadai is one of the oldest joints in the city. From their humble beginnings of selling only idli to their growth today, establishing branches, franchise across the state, they've been serving quality idli and dosai.

Their USP is their variety of chutneys. They serve 4 different types of chutneys no matter you eat one idli or gulp down a dozen of them. Of course they give their sambar, but to me the chutneys alone are enough.

Their idlis are soft and spongy. Just dunk a piece of idli in one chutney and savour it. A whole idli will be gone before you even know.

Their chinna vengaya podi uthappam is a must try. A thick, spongy uthappam, topped with sliced small onion (shallot), cooked to perfection on the griddle, with a generous helping of the idli powder on top. Opt for a ghee variant for a drizzle of ghee on top.

This is a branch of the original Murugan Idli Shop chain, but unlike the newer upscale locations, this one is still operating in a small location and is more like a 'hole-in-the-wall' set up.

Located quite close to the Meenakshi Amman temple, the shop has been here for ages and is somewhat of a landmark.

When we got out of the temple late in the evening and my little one wanted to have idlis, we asked around for a good restaurant and someone directed us to this place.

I read a lot about the murugan idly shop and wanted to try it. I finally got a chance to try it and it was worth a visit. I would recommend every one to try this eatery when in Madurai. It is not just a idly joint with good food but a eatery with a history. The 70 year shop started as humble eatery joint and today has several stores spread across Chennai, Singapore and several other international cities.
